CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College snapped an 11-game losing streak with an impressive 9-5 road victory over future Big South Conference opponent Charleston Southern on Wednesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
Pitcher Eric Tatum (Buford, Ga.), earned his third victory of the season, surrendering three earned runs on four hits while striking out four batters in six innings of action. Tatum gave way to the bullpen combination of Daniel Hill (Matthews, N.C.), Ben Dollar (Gaffney, S.C.) and Andrew Cockerham (Millers Creek, N.C.). They allowed just one run on two hits over the final three innings to shut down the Buccaneers.
Four Blue Hose batters had multiple hits in the game, led by William Bolchoz (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) with a 3-for-4, one RBI, one run game. Jared Combs (Pooler, Ga.) led the team with three RBIs, hitting 2-for-4 from the plate, which included a triple.
Zac Rhinesmith (Acworth, Ga.) anchored the top of the PC lineup with a 2-for-4, one RBI performance. He hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. Casey Carlson (Lexington, S.C.) rounded out multi-hit batters with a 2-for-3, one RBI, two-run game.
Senior Steven Henry (Hoschton, Ga.) provided the early power with a home run to right centerfield in the second inning for the 2-0 lead.
CSU took its first lead of the game after plating three runs in the fourth.
PC bounced back with two runs in the fifth, as Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) scored from second base on a Carlson single into center field. Carlson scored two batters later when Bolchoz lifted a single into left field for the 4-3 PC lead.
With the score knotted at 4-4, following a sacrifice fly by Charleston Southern in the sixth, Rhinesmith's home run to lead off the seventh would give PC a lead it would not relinquish. PC would plate Jesse Harmon later in the inning on a throwing error for the 6-4 lead.
The decisive runs came in the eighth, when with the bases loaded Combs hit a bases clearing triple that scored Rhinesmith, Craven and Simpson on the play.
PC finishes 2-5 against future Big South Conference opposition with the victory, earning wins in 2008 over UNC Asheville and Charleston Southern.
The Blue Hose next take on SoCon power The Citadel at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. The first game of the three-game series is at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 15.
