CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College
volleyball team wrapped up homecoming with a fireworks show Saturday evening,
knocking off Charleston Southern 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 26-24).
The Blue Hose now stand at 9-15 on the season and 4-5 in the Big South Conference. CSU falls
to 11-14 overall and 2-8 against conference competition.
"We've been playing much better lately," head coach Chris Belshe said. "Fall
break was good for us. It gave us a chance to reflect and figure out what is
important to the team. The girls have come back with a different attitude.
Plus, the home crowd has been really good lately."
Leading the way for PC was Lisa Shelley, who slammed home a match-high 15
kills. In addition to her offensive prowess, she tallied a double-double with
10 digs. Presley Mabrey added 11 kills while Amanda Kettles powered home nine
points offensively, three digs and five blocks (one solo).
Kilee Ruppe dished out a match-high 36 assists to go along with four kills,
five digs and a block assist.
Defensively, Ashley Dunlap notched a team-best 11 digs while Elizabeth Heineman
totaled 10. eight of the nine student-athletes on the team recorded at least
two digs.
In the
first set, the visitors scored the first point of the set, but Belshe's team
went on a 7-2 run after that, which was sparked by the stellar play of Kettles
on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Kettles evened the set
at 1-1 with a kill. She then teamed up with Shelley to stuff a CSU player for a
2-1 advantage. Two plays later, Kettles and Shelley were teaming up again for
another block.
Up 12-9, PC embarked on a 6-3 run for a six-point advantage. Shelley had two
kills in the run while Lindsey Harris and Presley Mabrey each tallied a kill.
The Blue Hose were not threatened the rest of the way, cruising to a 25-16 win
after Mabrey slammed home the set-winning point.
In the second set, PC found itself in a tough battle. The Blue Hose trailed
10-6, but a time-out by Belshe helped the squad get things back in order.
Mabrey recorded a kill to get things going. Then, four straight errors by the
visitors, one of which was a block by Ruppe and Kettles, evened the score at
10-10.
The teams traded points, but the Lady Bucs took a 17-16 lead after a quick
time-out by CSU. An error gave the ball back to PC. The Blue Hose promptly took
control of the set, eventually winning 25-22 heading into intermission.
The third set proved to be the toughest. In an all out battle, CSU took a 16-13
lead, forcing a break in the action. The Blue Hose tied the set at 19-19 on an
attack error by the Lady Bucs. PC built a 23-20 lead on Shelley's kill, but the
visitors would not give up. Two miscues by the Blue Hose knotted the contest at
24 apiece.
Belshe's team brought it together though. Shelley willed the team to victory
with back-to-back kills off passes from Ruppe, ending the set at 26-24.
PC will
head to UNC Asheville for a match Oct. 27 beginning at 7 p.m. CSU hosts Coastal Carolina on Oct.
27.
