CLINTON, S.C. - Despite a hard-fought match, the Presbyterian College volleyball team was unable to
defeat UNC Asheville Tuesday evening, falling 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 23-25).
The Blue Hose fall to 7-12 overall and 2-3 in Big South play. The Bulldogs
improve to 15-5 on the year and 4-0 against conference competition.
PC was led by Lisa Shelley's 11 kills. Rookie Allison Brown and junior Kilee
Ruppe each added six in the match.
Ruppe dished out a team-high 25 assists to go along with eight digs and two
block assists. Elizabeth Heinemen recorded a team-best 10 digs while newcomer
Allison Brown accounted for three blocks, including the team's lone solo stuff.
In the
first set, PC took an early lead, holding a three-point edge when Haley
Thurmond smashed home a Ruppe pass for a 5-2 advantage. The teams continued to
trade points until an attack error by Kelsey Benorden gave PC a 9-6 lead.
UNCA countered with a four-point run to even the set at 10 apiece. The Blue
Hose went ahead 12-11 on a service error. However, an error by head coach Chris
Belshe's team evened the set at 12-12. Raquel Miotto dropped back to serve,
helping the visitors go on a 9-0 run for a 21-12 lead by the Bulldogs.
PC tried to climb back in the set, slowly cutting into the lead. Despite
scoring three straight points, two of which came from Shelley and another by
Allison Brown, the home team could not get back into the set as UNCA won 25-19.
PC fell
behind 4-1 in the second set, but quickly got
back into the contest, deadlocking the score at six. The teams battled
back-and-forth until a 3-0 run gave the Blue Hose a 13-11 lead. After a kill by
Ruppe, UNCA committed back-to-back errors for the advantage.
The Blue Hose maintained a two-point edge at 15-13 when Haley Thurmond and
Amanda Kettles stuffed a shot. However, the Bulldogs knotted the score at 16
apiece with a block. After the teams traded the next four points, a kill by
Benorden gave the visitors the lead for good. UNCA closed the set on a 7-1 spurt.
PC and UNCA played another very competitive set in the third frame. After
falling behind 2-0, the Blue Hose reeled off four straight points, coming on
kills by Shelley, Ruppe, Mabrey and an attack error by the Bulldogs.
The Blue Hose would garner a three-point edge and 8-5 and would extend the
margin to four at 10-6 when Brown delivered a kill. The teams traded points
until Haley Thurmond's kill forced the visitors to use a time-out with PC up
14-10.
UNCA crept back into the set, tying it at 17. PC regained the edge on Brown's
kill only to see the Bulldogs counter with three straight markers.
The resilient Blue Hose would not give up, evening the set at 21-21. After
trading points, Cindi Miller's kill and an attack error by PC gave UNCA a 24-22
lead. Shelley tallied a kill, pulling the Blue Hose within one, but the team
could not gain the next point, thus ending the match.
The Blue
Hose return to action on Friday night when they play host to Winthrop at 7 p.m.
