STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Presbyterian College baseball
team took the lead going into the bottom half of the ninth frame, but was
unable hold on Saturday afternoon, falling to Georgia Southern 7-6.
The Blue Hose fall to 0-2 on the year while the Eagles improve to 2-0.
Jesse Harmon led off the game with a solo shot to right center, giving PC an
early 1-0 lead.
With the score tied at one apiece heading to the top of the third, head coach
Elton Pollock's team jumped out to take a 5-1 lead after its at bat. Zac
Rhinesmith led off the frame with a walk. Cory Lyda singled to right, advancing
him to second. The runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. After
a groundout plated a run, redshirt-senior Jared Combs launched a two-run bomb
down the left field line.
Two batters later, Nate Horton doubled home Bobby Cole for
the advantage.
Georgia
Southern tacked on a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth, knotting the
contest at 5-5.
The score remained the same until the ninth frame.
With one away, Lyda stepped to the plate and blasted a solo shot to left field,
giving the Blue Hose a 6-5 lead.
However, things unraveled in the bottom half of the frame for PC. The team
committed three errors en route to allowing two runs, including the winning
one.
Drew Wingo tried to get the second out of the inning, but allowed the winning
run to score off an errant throw.
For the game, the Blue Hose committed five errors.
Daniel Hill suffered the loss, tossing two-thirds of an inning. He allowed two
runs, neither of which were earned, while giving up one hit.
Harmon led the way, recording three hits in five at bats. Lyda, Kenny Bryant
and Cole each amassed two hits while Rhinesmith, Combs, Horton, Dane Fehr and
Andrew Williams each got on base with solid base knocks.
The Blue Hose return to action tomorrow when they take on
the Eagles in the final game of the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
