CLINTON, S.C. ? The
Presbyterian College baseball team put forth tremendous effort in the cold rain
Sunday afternoon but came up just short, falling 12-10 in eight innings to VMI.
The Blue Hose stand at 2-12 on the season and 0-5 in Big South play. The Keydets improve
to 8-8 on the year.
Leading the
way for head coach Elton Pollock's team was Jesse Harmon, who had three hits,
two RBI and scored three runs. Cory Lyda tallied two hits to go along with two
RBI. Zac Rhinesmith posted two hits, accounting for two RBI and scored three
times.
After
falling behind 3-0, the Blue Hose battled back by plating a run in the third
and two more in the fourth.
Rhinesmith got things going with a double to left center. Then, with two outs,
Mack Hite reached on a throwing error, which allowed Rhinesmith to scamper all
the way home.
In the fourth, Tony Micklon reached on a fielding error that would have been
the third out. Rhinesmith stepped to the plate and slammed a two-run homer,
knotting the score at three apiece.
The Keydets
regained the lead with four runs in the fifth. In the inning, the team had just
two hits, but scored one on an error and one on a wild pitch.
Pollock's
team continued to put forth a tremendous effort, getting a run back in the
bottom half of the frame. Harmon got things going with a single to short and
moved to second on Hite's sacrifice bunt. He came around to score on a throwing
error.
After holding the visitors scoreless in the sixth, PC took an 8-7 lead in the
bottom half of the inning. Drew Wingo's single put runners on first and third.
Rhinesmith was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
Dane Fehr's sacrifice fly scored Horton. Harmon's single to center allowed
another run to cross home.
A pitching change did not stop the hot bats. Lyda singled home Rhinesmith
before Kenny Bryant's single plated the fourth run of the frame.
With the
rain continuing at a steady pace, the Keydets were able to score three runs in
the seventh and two in the eighth, taking a 12-8 advantage.
In what turned out to be the team's last at bat, Andrew Williams singled down
the left field line. He then scored on Harmon's triple to right center field.
Eventually, Lyda singled home Harmon, but VMI was able to get the next two batters
via strikeouts to end the shortened game.
For the
game, PC had 10 runs on 12 hits while committing two errors. VMI tallied 12
runs on 11 hits and committed three errors.
The Blue
Hose will travel to Clemson for a Tuesday night affair. First pitch is slated
for 6:30 p.m.
