CLINTON, S.C. ?The Presbyterian College baseball team scored two runs
in the first inning against Radford to take an early lead on Saturday, but was
unable to hold on as the Highlanders answered with 13 runs to take the game
13-3.
In the second game of the weekend series the Blue Hose (2-15, 0-7 BSC)
came out swinging with both Jesse Harmon (Newberry, S.C./Newberry) and Mack
Hite (Abbeville, S.C./Abbeville) singling to start the first inning. A sacrifice
bunt from senior Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest) advanced the runners
to second and third with one out.
Freshman Kenny Bryant (Goose Creek, S.C./Goose Creek)
grounded out to second base, but drove in Harmon to score PC's first run of the
game. A Radford fielding error then allowed the Blue Hose to plate their second
run of the inning.
After scoring one run in the second, Radford's (7-8, 2-1 BSC) offense
came alive starting in the fourth inning, scoring three runs in each of the
next four innings to take a 13-2 lead heading into the eighth inning.
The Blue Hose continued to fight, however, as Hite led off in the bottom
of the eighth with a single and quickly stole second base. Lyda then collected
his second RBI of the game with a single to right field that drove in Hite to
bring the score to 13-3 in favor of the
Highlanders.
Continuing with the momentum into the ninth inning, Drew Wingo
(Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) singled, then advanced to second when Bobby Cole (Gwinnett, Ga./Hebron Academy) was hit
by a pitch. Another hit batter loaded the bases for PC, but the Blue Hose
couldn't convert and left all three stranded to end the game.
Radford gave up three runs on eight hits and committed one error, while
PC allowed 13 runs on 18 hits with two errors.
Harmon and Hite led PC with two hits each, while Lyda and Bryant each
recorded an RBI in the loss for the Blue Hose. Hite scored two of the runs for
the Blue Hose while Harmon crossed home plate once.
Jeff Kemp led Radford with four hits and Robert Lamas chipped in three. Pitcher
Shane Pysh earned the win for Radford, and Garrett Moore (Rowesville,
S.C./USC-Salkhatchee) took the loss for PC.
The Blue Hose left eight runners stranded in the game while the
Highlanders left 11 student-athletes on the base paths.
Moore tossed 4.2 innings of work while
giving up seven runs on 10 hits. He struck out four while taking the loss.
Daniel Hill struck out three in two innings of work while Andrew Foushee tossed
2.1 innings of relief ball. Foushee had a strikeout and a walk, but did not
allow a hit by the visiting team.
The Blue Hose return to action tomorrow at 1
p.m. to close out the three-game series against the Highlanders.
