COLUMBIA, S.C. ?
The Presbyterian College baseball team held a lead for the majority of the game
at No. 18 South Carolina, but the Gamecocks scored two runs in the bottom of
the seventh to prevail 6-5 Monday evening.
The Blue Hose fall to 2-9 on the season while the Gamecocks improve to 9-1.
Leading the way for head coach Elton Pollock's team was Jesse Harmon, who
notched two hits in three at bats while driving in one and scoring once. Kenny
Bryant's lone hit of the game was a solo blast. In addition to those two, Nate
Horton, Jared Combs and Zac Rhinesmith all scored once.
After a strong start by PC pitcher Garrett Moore, the Blue Hose took an early
1-0 lead in the top of the third frame. With one out, Harmon homered to right
center field, putting the visitors on top with their first hit of the contest.
However, the lead would not last long as the Gamecocks plated three runs in the
bottom half of the same inning thanks in part to Nick Ebert's three-run homer.
The home team took a 4-1 advantage in the fourth after Bobby Haney's double
allowed Kyle Enders to cross home.
PC, a very resilient squad, battled back to knot the score in the top of the
fifth stanza. Nate Horton singled to get things going for Pollock's team. Combs then
reached on a fielding error, pushing Horton to second. Rhinesmith followed him
up as he reached on a throwing error by the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt.
He went to second on the play as Combs and Horton came around to score.
Harmon put down a perfect bunt single, pushing Rhinesmith to third on the play.
Lyda brought Rhinesmith home on a hard hit ball to the center fielder, earning
the sacrifice fly while tying the score at 4-4.
The Blue Hose took a 5-4 lead in the sixth behind Bryant's solo shot over the
right field fence to start the inning.
The score remained in PC's favor through the sixth inning. However, the
Gamecocks tacked on two runs in the seventh to take the 6-5 lead they would not
relinquish.
Things got interesting in the ninth as Tony Micklon worked the pitcher for a
leadoff walk. Jeffrey Tatum pinch ran for him. Horton then came up to the plate
and successfully bunted Tatum to second.
With one out, Combs advanced the runner on a fly ball to center field. As the
tying run was just 90 feet away, Rhinesmith was unable to
bring him home as he grounded out to the pitcher on a 2-0 count to end the
game.
The Blue Hose return to action Wednesday when they travel to Charlotte, N.C., for a 4 p.m., contest. PC will be looking to
snap a four-game losing skid.
