CLINTON, S.C. ? Jared Combs' solid day at the
plate was not enough for the Presbyterian College baseball team, which lost a 16-6
game Wednesday afternoon to Furman in a non-conference contest.
PC falls to
5-28 on the season with the loss. The Paladins improve to 15-18 on the year.
Combs paced
the Blue Hose with a three-for-four effort. He nearly had a perfect afternoon
but was robbed of a hit in his first at bat. Combs then laced a single, belted
a homer and recorded another one-bag base knock in his next three times at the
dish.
The
Paladins jumped on top of the Blue Hose with two quick runs in the second. With
two on and two out, Reece wade hit a bloop single that nobody could reach,
scoring the third and fourth runs of the stanza for a 4-0 advantage. Furman
would not stop there. The visitors added two more markers on a double to the
fence for a 6-0 lead. The squad would add one more run for a 7-0 advantage
after just 1.5 innings of play.
Leading 8-0
to begin the fifth, Campbell Lewis belted a three-run homer for the visitors.
The first two batters of the frame had reached safely. Micah Black then sent a
pitch that Lewis was able to drive over the left field wall for the 11-0
advantage.
PC got on
the board in its half of the fifth frame. Gabe Grammer singled to lead off the
inning. He was plated by Andrew Williams' double off the left center field
wall, making the score 11-1.
After
extending his hit streak to 16 games earlier in the contest, Combs came through
with a monster two-run home run over the left field fence.
Trailing
16-3 in the eighth, the Blue Hose patiently worked their way
on base. With two away, Tony Micklon and Grammer each got on base safely with
walks. Andrew Williams doubled down the right field line, scoring Micklon.
The Blue
Hose continued to battle. After Cory Lyda lined out to lead off the ninth,
Combs drew a base on balls. He scampered to second on a wild pitch before
coming home on Caleb Brazell's single to center field. Brazell moved to second
on a fielding error. He was then plated by Dane Fehr's single down the left
field line.
Taking the
loss for PC is Andrew Foushee, who now falls to 1-5 on the year. Foushee lasted
1.2 innings. He gave up seven runs on seven hits while striking out one. Chris
Hale tossed 1.1 frames. He gave up one run on two hits.
Black threw
1.1 innings. He gave up three runs on one hit. He walked two while striking out
one.
Charlie
Abbott came in and gave up four runs on three hits. He walked two without
striking any Paladins out. Travis McConnell came in and went 2.1 innings. He
gave up one run on three hits. McConnell also struck out one.
For the
game, the visitors tallied 16 runs on 16 hits. PC notched six runs on 13 hits.
The Blue
Hose return to action Friday at 2 p.m., when they travel to Charleston Southern for a Big South Conference
showdown.
