SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The
Presbyterian College baseball team bounced back from a heartbreaking 9-7 loss
to Wofford Tuesday afternoon to down the Terriers by a 7-2 count Wednesday
evening in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Blue
Hose improve to 9-29 on the season.
Redshirt-senior
Jared Combs belted a three-run double to put PC ahead 3-1 in the third frame. Tony Micklon led
off the inning with a double. After a Gabe Grammer walk, Andrew Williams
singled to load the bases for Cory Lyda.
Lyda was unable to bring anyone home as he struck out looking, but Combs came
through in the clutch. His three-run double was down the left field line.
PC
attempted to extend its lead in the fifth, but the squad left the bases full
after getting three student-athletes on with only one away.
For the
third time in the game, the Blue Hose managed to get runners on every base. For
the second time, the team could not plate a run. With two outs in the seventh,
Lyda and Jeffrey Tatum moved to second and third on a passed ball. Combs was
walked on four straight pitches. Then, Kenny Bryant stepped up to the plate.
With a full count, he could not get enough on the ball, grounding out to the
first baseman.
Wofford
pulled within one on a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Head coach
Elton Pollock's team made sure to get the run and more back in the top of the
eighth stanza.
Zac
Rhinesmith singled to third and moved to second on Jesse Harmon's sacrifice
bunt. On a 1-2 count, Micklon reached on an error and moved to second base on
the play. Due to the error, Rhinesmith scored to make it 4-2.
On Nate
Horton's single, Micklon tried to score but was thrown out at home. However, on
the throw to the plate, Horton rushed to scoring position. Gabe Grammer struck out
swinging, but reached first on a passed ball. At the same time, Horton took
third. Williams singled to short, scoring Horton for a 5-2 advantage.
After
holding Wofford off the scoreboard in the eighth, PC tacked on two runs in the
ninth to put the game out of reach.
Combs led off with a walk and promptly went to second as the Terriers walked
Kenny Bryant. Rhinesmith reached on a fielder's choice, but Combs was out at
third. Harmon reached on a fielder's choice and quickly swiped second to put
two in scoring position. Micklon brought both home on a single for the 7-2 lead
with just three outs to play.
Grammer
came in and quickly forced a line-out, a ground-out and another fly ball to end
the game.
Mitchell
Odom (3-0) picked up the win for PC.

Hose return to action this weekend as they play host to Coastal Carolina this
