GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball
team fell twice Tuesday to Furman by scores of 6-5 and 8-5 in non-conference action.
The Blue
Hose now stand at 5-23 on the season.
In game
one, Nate Horton led the way with a three-RBI slate on one hit. Jesse Harmon
and Zac Rhinesmith each knocked in one. Rhinesmith was plated twice. Kenny
Bryant, Cory Lyda and Jesse Harmon all crossed home once.
Lyda
extended his hitting streak to 14 games, gaining two base hits in four at bats.
Jared Combs pushed his hitting streak to 10 games.
Harmon
broke the scoreless tie in the third stanza, belting a solo shot to right. The
visitors widened the lead to 2-0 when Rhinesmith launched a solo homer to left
in the fourth.
After
Furman cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fourth, head coach Elton
Pollock's team plated three runs in the fifth to make the score 5-1. With one
away, Lyda singled to first. Then, with two outs, Bryant walked. Lyda went to
third on a wild pitch and Bryant moved up 90 feet when Rhinesmith drew a base on
balls.
Horton then
came through with a two-out double to left center to put PC up by four.
However,
the lead would not last long as the Paladins scored three times in the bottom
of the sixth frame to make the score 5-4.
After PC
was unable to plate any runs in the seventh, the home team tied the game as the
lead-off man hit a solo homer to left center. The Blue Hose had gotten the
first two outs of the inning, but Furman kept things going, eventually winning when
Andrew Williams was narrowly beat out when racing to touch second as the
game-winning run scored on a fielder's choice.
Mitchell
Odom paved the way for PC, throwing five solid frames. He gave up just three
runs on seven hits while striking out six. Jordan Pace went two-thirds of an
inning, getting both batters he faced out.
Andrew
Foushee tossed one-third of an inning, taking the loss. He gave up three runs
on four hits. Jesse Harmon went two-thirds of an inning, striking out two while
walking one.
In game
two, PC once again jumped out to an early lead, but three runs by Furman in the
fifth ended up being the difference.
Lyda and
Gabe Grammer each had two hits while Combs, Bryant Harmon and Williams all
added one base hit.
Lyda drove
in two and scored twice. Rhinesmith, Grammer and Williams all plated one while
Bryant, Horton and Grammer all crossed home once.
Lyda got
things going in the first at bat, blasting a solo shot to right field with two
away. Combs then singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.
However, he was unable to cross home as Furman got out of the inning with an
infield fly.
The Blue
Hose kept the lead until the second. That's when the home team launched a
two-run homer, giving it a 2-1 lead. The Paladins pushed the lead to 4-1 in their next at bat.
However, PC
tied the game in the top of the fourth. Bryant led things off with a double
down the left field line. He then moved to third on a wild pitch before coming
home on an error. Grammer eventually tripled to right, plating Horton. Williams
then singled down the right field line, which allowed Grammer to score,
knotting the contest at 4-4.
Chris
Powell started for PC, throwing three innings while giving up five runs on four
hits. Pace tossed two-thirds of an inning without giving up a run. Micah Black
took the loss, throwing one frame while giving up three runs. Daniel Hill did
not allow a run in 1.1 innings of work.
After
Furman took a brief lead, the Blue Hose tied the score at 5-5 in the fifth when Lyda homered to
right field. The Paladins took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth
with three runs of their own. The first run came on a lead-off homer, which
turned out to be all the team would need for the win.
PC returns
to action tomorrow when it makes the short drive to USC Upstate. Last week, the
Blue Hose downed the Spartans 9-4 in Clinton.
