CLINTON, S.C. ? The
Presbyterian College baseball team snapped an 18-game losing streak to The
Citadel, which spanned 81 years, Tuesday afternoon in the team's last home
baseball game of the year by a 12-6 count.
The Blue
Hose improve to 11-37 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 31-20 on the
year.
The two
redshirt-seniors for PC each garnered three hits while Gabe Grammer pounded out
four. Grammer was just a homer shy of the cycle as he drove in three and scored
three times. Combs drove in two as did Tony Micklon and Andrew Williams.
Williams, Hite, Combs, Harmon and Bryant all scored once.
However,
Rhinesmith crossed home four times and Grammer came around three times.
After allowing
two runs in the first and two in the third, the PC bats came alive in its turn
at the plate in the bottom of the third.
Rhinesmith
led off the at bat with a base on ball. After a Grammer single, Mack Hite
walked two batters later to load the bases.
Cory Lyda was unable to bring anyone home as he popped up to second base. With
two away, Jared Combs came through with a big two-RBI single. Jesse Harmon's
single pulled the home team within one, 4-3. Then, catcher Micklon drilled a
two-out double to the left field fence as the Blue Hose took the lead.
Head coach
Elton Pollock's team continued to add to its lead in the fourth. Rhinesmith led
off the stanza with a single. Grammer followed him up with a single. Both
student-athletes came around to score on Andrew Williams' double for a 7-4
advantage. Lyda drove home Williams for the three-run margin after four
complete innings.
The
Bulldogs cut the deficit to three in the fifth by plating a run. However, PC
got the run back in the bottom of the fifth. With two down, Rhinesmith singled
to right. Then, Grammer smashed a triple to the right centerfield gap, making
the score 9-5.
With one
away in the sixth, Andrew Foushee forced a deep fly to center field by Bryan Altman.
Lyda took the ball and rifled it to Combs, who tagged Kyle Jordan going to third for the final out.
Combs tagged him just before Sid Fallaw crossed home plate, keeping the score at
9-5.
PC
continued to batter the Bulldogs in the seventh. Bryant smashed a double with
two away. He moved to third on Rhinesmith's infield single that caromed off the
pitcher. Then, Grammer belted a double to right field, plating two. He came
around to score when Williams reached on an error for a seven-run advantage,
12-5.
Mitchell
Odom (4-3) recorded the win, going five innings while giving up five runs on
nine hits. Foushee worked two innings, giving up two hits while striking out
one. Jesse Harmon came in for the final two frames. He gave up one run on one
hit while fanning two.
TJ Clarkson
suffered his first loss of the season. He now stands at 3-1. Clarkson gave up
five runs in 2.2 innings on three hits.
The Blue
Hose return to action Thursday when they head to UNC Asheville for the first
game in the three-game set.
