CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped a 12-2 decision at The Citadel Tuesday evening in a non-conference afternoon contest.
The Blue Hose now stand at 10-35 on the season.
With the score deadlocked at 0-0 after the first two innings, PC plated two runs in the top of the third. Andrew Williams singled to right to get things started. He then scored after Mack Hite singled to third and advanced to second on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead.
Cory Lyda grounded out to second, pushing Hite to third. After an infield fly, Hite scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 lead.
The Citadel answered the call with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the third when Sonny Meade doubled home two student-athletes.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the fifth, Hite recorded an infield single and moved to third on Jared Combs' base knock to right center field. However, with two away, Kenny Bryant struck out to end the inning.
The host school tacked on two more runs in the fifth, taking a 6-2 lead into the sixth frame. In the sixth and seventh innings combined, PC managed just one base runner, who did not get past first base.
David Greene doubled home Chris McGuiness in the bottom of the seventh inning. With runners on second and third, Orvin singled to bring the two home for a 9-2 advantage.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the eighth for the final 12-2 margin.
For the game, PC managed two runs on seven hits while committing one error. The Citadel had 12 runs on 16 hits with one miscue.
Hite led the way with four hits in four tries, scoring one run. Williams, Combs and Zac Rhinesmith were the other PC student-athletes to tally a base knock. Williams and Hite scored the lone runs for the Blue Hose.
Garrett Moore started the game, tossing 3.2 innings. He gave up four runs on five hits. Joe Hammond also saw time on the mound, throwing 3.1 innings of relief. He gave up five runs on seven hits.
The Blue Hose will host Duke in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m.
