ATHENS, Ga. - The Presbyterian College Blue
Hose volleyball squad powered past SEC foe Georgia 25-21 in the first set, but was unable to
overcome the Bulldogs, falling in four sets, 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 10-25).
The Blue Hose now stand at 3-4 on the young season.
Rookie Presley Mabrey led the way for head coach Chris Belshe's team, slamming
home 12 kills in the match.
Mabrey was
one of three Blue Hose student-athletes to record double-digit kills. Juniors
Amanda Kettles (11 kills) and Lisa Shelley (10 kills) also hit the plateau.
Fellow rookie Allison Brown narrowly missed double figures, tallying nine
slams.
Kettles had
the squad's only solo block while also teaming with Brown for a stuff.
Junior Kilee Ruppe dished out all 40 assists that PC had for the night.
Defensively, Elizabeth Heineman accounted for a team-high 13 digs.
In the
opening frame, PC hit an outstanding .452 on 15 kills with just one error.
After finding themselves in a quick 2-0 hole to start the match, the Blue Hose
stormed back, evening the match at two apiece off a kill from Brown and an
attack error. PC fell behind 6-4, but slowly pulled even, knotting the contest
at 7-7 on a kill from Kettles.
Ruppe went back to Kettles on the next play as PC took the lead, 8-7. Kettles
and Shelley posted back-to-back slams for a 10-7 margin.
With the score 13-12 in favor of the Blue Hose, Shelley
added to the lead with a kill. Mabrey then answered a point by the Bulldogs
with one of her own for a 15-13 advantage.
After a quick score from UGA, Belshe's squad got hot. The pressure defense
forced the home school into four straight attack errors after a point from
Mabrey, putting the score at 20-14. The Blue Hose kept their lead, with the
Bulldogs pulling to within three, 24-21. However, Ruppe found Shelley, who
connected for set point and giving the Blue Hose a 25-21 victory.
PC was
unable to carry the momentum over to the second set as UGA raced out to a 10-5
lead. Shelley's kill pulled the team within five, 14-9, but the Bulldogs went
on a 4-1 run to extend the margin and never looked back, winning 25-16.
The Blue
Hose found themselves behind 7-2 in the third set, but slowly crept
back into the set. An attack error by Erika Clark pulled PC within three,
13-10. Eleven points later, the Blue Hose saw themselves down by the same
margin, 17-14. The teams essentially traded points the rest of the way as PC
fell 25-20.
The Blue
Hose took an early 2-1 lead on Brown's kill from Ruppe in the fourth set.
However, the Bulldogs went on a 7-3 spurt. Mabrey's kill made the count 8-5 and
a few points later, PC saw itself trailing by just four, 10-6. The Blue Hose
could get no closer the rest of the way as UGA pulled away for the 25-10
victory.
The Blue
Hose return to the court Friday at 4:30 when they tangle in a neutral site
affair against Northwestern.
