CLINTON, S.C. - Jake Troyli and Walt
Allen each tallied their first career double-double, helping the Presbyterian
College men's basketball team to an 89-75 overtime victory over the visiting
VMI Keydets Saturday evening.
Troyli tallied 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds while Allen came off the
bench to net 11 points and grab 10 rebounds. However, it was a total team
effort that helped PC overcome a 17-point first-half deficit as four more student-athletes
scored in double figures for the game.
Chase Holmes led the team with 21 points while Khalid Mutakabbir netted 13.
Ryan Hargrave mustered career highs with 12 points and eight rebounds while
Travis Smith chipped in 11 points in the victory.
Tied at 69 apiece as Stan Okoye hit a runner to force the extra session, PC
rattled off the first seven points in the first 1:52 of the period, essentially
putting the game away.
Smith opened the scoring with a deep three-point shot 42 seconds into overtime.
Then, Holmes stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a five-point lead.
Smith dished the ball to Allen for an easy lay-up for the 76-69 lead.
The Keydets trimmed the deficit to four at 76-72, but the Blue Hose concluded
the game on a 13-2 run. Troyli scored an old-fashioned three-point play and
after the visitors cut it to five, Holmes answered with a turnaround jumper as
the shot clock expired for an 81-74 advantage. PC hit its foul shots down the
stretch for the final margin.
Early in the second half, VMI held a 42-25 lead, but the home team did not give
up. The Blue Hose slowly climbed back into the game. After slicing into the
lead to make it single digits, Austin Kenon's bucket with 12:31 to play put the
score at 55-45.
With 4:41 to go, Allen's lay-up tied the contest at 60. Smith's bucket just
over a minute later gave PC its first lead of the game. The Blue Hose built a
four-point advantage, 67-63, on Smith's made free throws only to see the
Keydets battle back. Tied at 67 apiece, Holmes made a twisting lay-up with five
second to play. After multiple timeouts, Okoye drove the length of the court,
hitting the floater that forced overtime.
Trailing 26-9 just 10:30 into the game, head coach Gregg Nibert's team posted a
16-3 run, slicing the deficit just four with 4:16 to play. During the spurt,
Zach Faircloth and Troyli each connected on quick baskets on fast breaks. Allen
then netted four straight foul shots before the Blue Hose got the ball back
after a turnover.
On the ensuing possession, Troyli was fouled. He calmly went to the line and
hit both charity tosses, pulling PC within nine at 29-20. Over the next 42
seconds, Nibert's squad would rattle off six straight points.
Hargrave caught a pass from Troyli and hit an easy lay-up. Fouled on the play,
Hargrave made the foul shot for an old-fashioned three-point play. Mutakabbir
then went sliced through the defense for the fast-break lay-up, making the
score 29-25. However, VMI went on an 11-0 run to end the half.
In the opening half, Hargrave led the way with five rebounds while tying his
career high with four boards. Kevin Davis came off the bench to pull down a
career-high four rebounds in the first half. Along with Hargrave, Holmes and
Faircloth each chipped in five points.
For the game, PC hit 31-of-67 shots for 46.3 percent while limiting the Keydets
to 24-f-74 for 32.4 percent. The Blue hose canned 23-of-30 shots from the foul
line while VMI made 19-of-26.
PC grabbed a season-high 53 rebounds and outscored the Keydets 48-28 in the
paint.
The Blue Hose return to action next Saturday when they play host to Winthrop.
