CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College volleyball team could not overcome
an extra-point first-set loss Saturday, eventually falling to Radford 3-0. Set
scores were 25-27, 19-25, 15-25.
The Blue Hose were led by Amanda Kettles and Presley Mabrey, who each accounted
for a team-high eight kills. Allison Brown chipped in seven.
Kilee Ruppe dished out a match-high 29 assists. Ruppe and Heineman posted the
only aces for PC.
Mabrey reached double figures for digs with 11 while Ashley Dunlap was just one
below her with 10. Kettles stuffed two shots by herself while Mabrey and
Shelley each had a solo block.
In the first set, Radford jumped out to a 4-1 lead only to see the Blue Hose
come alive. Barman and Shelley posted back-to-back kills and Mabrey's smash
evened the contest at six. Trailing 7-6, the Blue Hose raced ahead thanks in
part to a block by Mabrey and Barman. Mabrey's kill and an error by the
Highlanders made the score 11-8.
The teams battled back-and-forth, but an attack error by the Blue Hose put RU
ahead 17-14. PC inched closer, pulling within two, 24-22. Then, a kill by
Kettles and an ace by Heineman knotted the score at 24. Kettles evened the set
at 25 with a kill, but the visitors were able to pull off the 27-25 win with
two straight points.
In the second set, PC found itself down in the early going only to battle back
and take a 10-9 lead on Barman's kill. However, it marked the last lead of the
set for the Blue Hose as the Highlanders went on a 3-0 spurt for a 12-10
advantage. The visitors extended the margin to seven before PC cut into the
lead. An attack error by RU made it 22-18, but the squad could get no closer
the rest of the way.
After the intermission, PC came out of
the locker room and Mabrey smashed the ball off a RU defender for a 1-0 margin.
The Highlanders were able to open the margin to seven at 12-5 only to have
Kettles slam home a pass from Ruppe.
Trailing by 10, Mabrey and Ruppe posted kills, but it was not enough in the
25-15 loss.
The Blue Hose return to action Nov. 10 at Winthrop. First serve will be at 6
p.m.
