LEXINGTON, Va. - Five Presbyterian College players scored in double
figures, helping the squad pick up its first Big South Conference win of the
season, downing VMI 92-78 Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hose improve to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Keydets fall
to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in Big South play.
The 92 points are the most the program has posted against a
fellow Division I program. Only twice before have the Blue Hose scored at least
90 points since making the move to Division I (in wins over Allen and Carver
Bible College).
Preseason all-conference performer Al'Lonzo Coleman accounted for a team-high
23 points and eight rebounds, but Khalid Mutakabbir dropped in a career-high 22
points on six-of-seven shooting from the floor to go along with seven assists
and five rebounds. Jake Troyli netted 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Redshirt-junior Pierre Miller accounted for 15 points, six assists and five
rebounds while Walt Allen broke into double figures with 11 points in the win.
It marks just the second time since the 2007-08 season that PC has had five
players score in double figures in a single game - with the last time coming in
the win over Carver Bible Coverage.
VMI jumped out to an early 16-10 advantage behind back-to-back three pointers,
but Troyli's lay-in cut the deficit to four at the 14:28 mark. Troyli added
three more points to trim the deficit to one, 16-15. Coleman's charity shot
with 13:40 to play tied the contest.
After a bucket by VMI, Mutakabbir's three-point shot gave PC its first lead,
19-18.
With the Keydets ahead 24-23, Allen and Mutakabbir drained back-to-back threes
for a five-point edge with 9:19 to go in the first half. The Blue Hose maintained
an edge until VMI tied it with six minutes to go.
The home squad then tied its biggest lead of the half with 3:42 to play, but
Coleman found Mutakabbir for a lay-up, making the score 38-34. That ignited an
11-3 run by the Blue Hose to close out the first half with Coleman and Miller
on the sideline due to foul trouble.
The Keydets' three-point shot with 45 seconds to go gave the home team a 41-40
lead, but head coach Gregg Nibert's team stayed strong and took the lead into
the break. After working the ball around the top of the key, Tyler Deihl kicked
it to Allen in the corner, who launched a shot with three seconds remaining.
The attempt swished through the net and VMI missed a three-quarter court shot
at the buzzer, sending the Blue Hose into the half ahead 43-41.
In the opening frame, Mutakabbir poured in 11 points on four-of-four shooting
from the floor. Allen and Troyli each had nine at the break. Coleman had five
points and five rebounds while Hargrave also dropped in five points and had
already pulled down six rebounds.
The Blue Hose opened the second half with Mutakabbir stealing the ball from a
VMI player. He then converted it into two points on the offensive end. He then
grabbed a missed Keydets' shot and on the next possession, Troyli's jumper
pushed the margin to six, 47-41 just 53 seconds in.
Neither team could score again until Coleman took a pass from Allen and laid it
into the bucket. VMI trimmed the lead to six on two possessions, but Mutakabbir
answered the bell with a three. Nibert's team corralled a rebound from a VMI
miss. The team worked it up the court and Mutakabbir found Miller for a deep
three, giving PC a 12-point edge at the 14:35 mark.
Coleman's lay-up with just over 12 minutes to play gave PC its biggest lead of
the contest, 62-47. It was not until the 8:32 mark that VMI could cut the
deficit to single digits. With the margin cut to five, 70-65, PC responded with
a three by Miller.
Two foul shots by VMI trimmed it to six with 5:05 to play, but that was as
close as the home team would get the rest of the way. On the next PC
possession, Troyli slammed home a pass from Mutakabbir for an eight-point lead.
Two charity tosses by Mutakabbir pushed the advantage to double figures with
3:46 to go - and the lead would only grow from that point forward.
For the game, PC drained 34-of-62 shots for 54.8 percent from the field,
including an eight-for-17 effort from behind the three-point line. Nibert's
team was also credited with 21 assists.
The Blue Hose also connected on 16 free throws and grabbed 39 rebounds while
limiting the Keydets to 30.
The win snaps a 17-game Big South road losing streak for the Blue Hose. PC's last
league road win came nearly two years ago to the day. On Dec. 6, 2008, the Blue
Hose defeated the Panthers of High Point 70-53 in High Point, N.C. in the
second conference game of the season (PC had opened the conference slate with a
56-53 overtime win at Coastal Carolina three days earlier). It also marks the
first time that PC has ever won in Lexington, Va.
The Blue Hose return to action Saturday, Dec. 11 at Missouri. Game time is
slated for 5 p.m. CT (6 p.m. EST).
