DURHAM, N.C. - The Presbyterian College baseball
team threw the ball, caught the ball and most importantly hit the ball very
well on Friday afternoon to take two wins over North Carolina Central, 18-1 and
10-3. The Blue Hose improved to 4-10 on
the year while the Eagles fell to 0-12 on the year. The day's twin-bill was played at the historic
Durham Athletic Park.
In the day's
opening game, eight of the nine Blue Hose starters posted hits as PC recorded
16 hits while the Eagles committed six errors in the seven inning game. PC scored three in the first, seven in the
second and cooled before posting seven more in the sixth. Along the way, PC scored single runs in the
fourth and seventh innings. While kept
off the scoreboard in the third and fifth innings, PC was not retired in order
at all in the game.
Matt Hill
went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored with a walk. Designated hitter Tony Micklon knocked in
five runs on a 3-for-4 day. He smashed
his first home run in the second inning, a three-run job, to account for PC's
only four-bagger of the day. The slugger
closed the day just a triple shy of the cycle.
Carl Della Torre, on the other hand, was 2-for-4 with a pair of triples.
Jesse Harmon
earned his first win of the season on the bump with a six inning outing where
he scattered three hits and allowed a lone run in the third inning. The senior fanned five while not allowing a
walk. Rodney Scruggs came in to work the
seventh inning and nail down the win for the Blue Hose.
In the day's
second game, PC tempered the scoring and hitting by only posting 10 runs off
eight hits. The Eagles made seven errors
in the game to post 13 for the doubleheader.
PC needed nine games to commit 13 errors while NCCU did it in just 14
innings. As a result, only three runs
were credited as earned.
Kenny Bryant
recorded two hits in four trips to the plate.
He also scored two runs and knocked one in. Della Torre had three RBI in the game while
going 1-for-3 in the game.
The Blue
Hose were blanked in the first inning, but went for three in the second, five in
the third and two more in the fourth to lead 10-0. The Eagles rallied with runs in the fifth,
sixth and seventh to cut in to the PC lead.
Steven Richardson recorded his first Division I win in the game as the junior college
transfer allowed four hits in five innings of work. The lefty gave up a single run while striking
out six. Justin Setzer and Matt Nodelman
each worked an inning down the stretch as PC claimed the win.
The Blue
Hose have the balance of the weekend off and will return to the diamond on
Wednesday for a St. Patrick's Day game against Wofford in Forest City, N.C.
