CLINTON,
S.C. - The game didn't end as
scripted, but Presbyterian College baseball earned a 5-4 win over Furman thanks
to a ninth inning two-out wild pitch with the bases loaded. Victory for the Blue Hose snaps a three-game
skid and improves PC to 6-13 on the year while Furman falls to 7-13 on the
campaign.
Kenny Bryant scored PC's first run of
the day in the second when he reached off a wild third strike. He was plated by Aaron Preston's two-out
single to left field.
Furman would touch PC starting pitcher
Joe Hammond up for a pair of two-run home runs off the scoreboard in the fourth
and fifth innings to take a 4-1 lead at the game's midway point. Hammond went six and allowed five of the six
Furman hits and all four runs while fanning three batters.
PC started the rally in the sixth inning
when Nate Horton mashed his third home run of the season to right center. Later in the inning, Preston sent Bryant home
for the second time of the game to make the score, 4-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, PC grabbed
the equalizer when Bryant claimed an RBI with a single to centerfield which
pushed pinch runner Jeff Tatum home.
The Blue Hose bullpen shut down the
Furman bats by allowing just one hit in the final three innings of work. Jordan Pace worked the first third of the
seventh while Rodney Scruggs closed the inning.
Tim Corbin started the eighth and retired his batter and made way for
Andrew Foushee. The sophomore righty
needed just 14 pitches to dismiss the final five batters. The only blemish was the lone hit he allowed
en route to his first win of the season, improving to 1-1.
The ninth inning started in fine fashion
for PC when Ryan Morris crushed the first pitch to centerfield. The ball didn't clear the fence, but it did
find the ground just shy of the fence and Morris legged out his first career
three-bagger. A ground out by Jesse
Harmon allowed Mack Hite to get the intentional walk. Carl Della Torre made the second out on a
foul pop to third base. Tony Micklon
found his way to first base when he was hit by the 3-2 pitch. That left the bases loaded for Kenny
Bryant. On the second pitch of the at
bat, the ball bounced in the dirt and ricocheted off the catcher's leg guard. With the ball rolling towards the first base
dugout, Morris scored easily to give PC the win.
Furman's Kevin Gottlieb was given the
loss and falls to 1-2.
Preston was 3-for-4 at the plate while
Horton went 2-for-4 with the home run.
The Blue Hose will travel to Wofford for the
second meeting between PC and the Terriers in a week. The game starts in Spartanburg at 7 p.m.
