SPARTANBURG,
S.C. - Presbyterian College's bid for
a season sweep over Wofford fell short on Wednesday night as the Terriers
topped the Blue Hose, 18-9. Wofford slugged three home runs while PC decked
five doubles and 11 total hits in the game.
The Blue Hose (6-14) opened the game by
working leadoff hitter Jesse Harmon around for a run in the first inning. The
senior reached on a two-base error and was moved over on a bunt and plated in
quick succession.
Wofford (8-11) matched PC's run in the
second inning and added to it in the third. The Terriers struck for eight runs
in the third stanza, scoring the runs off six hits.
PC cut into the margin with four runs in
the fifth inning. Harmon's one-out bases loaded walk scored the first run while
Nate Horton grabbed two RBI with a single to right plated two runners. An error
by the catcher trying to receive the relay throw allowed a third to score on the
play and advance Horton up to second base.
Three Wofford runs in the bottom of the
fifth took the Terrier advantage back to 12-5 just past the midway point. The
Blue Hose notched three tallies in the sixth when PC rattled off a triple,
single and a double in back-to-back-to-back trips to the plate.
An additional run in the top of the
seventh cut the margin to 12-9 when Kenny Bryant doubled home Tony Micklon.
Wofford tacked on six runs just after
the stretch to take a nine-run advantage into the final two frames.
Matt Hill led the team with a three-for-three
day at the plate with two doubles, a single and a walk. Gabe Grammer, Ryan Morris
and Harmon each scored two runs on the day while Horton had three RBI.
Nick Campo took the loss for PC,
allowing four runs in just a third of an inning of work to fall to 0-1 on the
season. Eight pitchers saw action for the Blue Hose while seven hurlers worked
for Wofford.
PC opens league play this weekend with a
three-game set against Gardner-Webb starting at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The
teams are slated for a 2 p.m. tilt on Saturday, followed by a 1 p.m. finale on
Sunday.
