CLINTON, S.C. - It was PC's number nine hitter,
Matthew Hill, who was the hero with a game winning single in the 10th
inning to push PC past Eastern Kentucky, 8-7.
The senior third baseman had his first two hits of the season in the win
as he batted in two runs.
Presbyterian
College (2-7) led on five separate occasions in the game which very nearly
would have gone down as a loss without a two-run base hit in the ninth by Kenny
Bryant.
Eastern
Kentucky (2-3) smashed two home runs in the game and scored twice in three
innings. But it was late defensive
miscues that ultimately cost the Colonels the victory. Errors in the ninth and tenth innings opened
the door for PC to grab the win.
Freshman
Nate Chong opened the scoring when he was plated by Bryant after his leadoff
double. The double was the fifth of the
season for Chong. EKU answered with a
lone run in the second to level the scores at 1-1.
In the
bottom of the frame, PC re-took the lead when Nate Horton was brought
around. Horton reached on PC's second
leadoff double in as many innings.
However, it was EKU who equalized with a home run to open the third
inning. A pair of singles followed by a
walk and a fielder's choice plated Jayson Langfels and gave the Colonels their
first lead of the game at 3-2.
The Blue
Hose came alive in the bottom of the third when Jesse Harmon sent Mack Hite and
Bryant home on a single through the left side to re-take the lead at 4-3.
After PC
starter Jordan Pace worked a scoreless fourth inning. The Colonels tacked two more on the board in
the fifth thanks to a two-run bomb from Michael Garcia. The home run was his second in as many games
after he stroked a game-winning grand slam to lift EKU over Tennessee in the
midweek.
Horton
opened the fifth inning in style as he sent his first home run of the season
over the right field fence to once again knot the teams at 5-5.
Pace made it
through an out in the sixth before being lifted in favor of Andrew Foushee with
runners on first and second. A wild
pitch followed by a sacrifice fly sent one run in and the second crossed thanks
to a double by Langfels. Pace was
accountable for all seven EKU runs as he surrendered ten hits and issued three
walks while striking out two.
Eastern
Kentucky lifted their starter, Matt Harris, to open the bottom of the sixth.
Foushee
settled in the seventh to work a scoreless frame and end a string of two
consecutive two-run EKU innings. The
hurler made way for Rodney Scruggs to open the eighth inning after PC went
scoreless in the bottom of the seventh.
After
blanking EKU in the top of the eighth, seventh and eighth hitters Alex Loftin
and Carl Della Torre both registered two out hits. However, the side was retired on strikes to
end the threat in the eighth.
Chris Powell
came on at the bump for the ninth to try and keep the lead at two runs. EKU leadoff batter Anthrony Ottrando singled
to left but was gunned down by Harmon at second base. The PC left fielder recorded his first
outfield assist of the season. A two-out
single put a runner on first but for the third time in the game, a Colonel
runner was picked off, the "1-3-4-1-6" pickoff play.
In the
bottom of the ninth, Chong opened the inning with a single to left field which
found a hole between the two outfielders.
Hite scorched a screamer to third which was momentarily misplayed but
the fielder was able to recover and retire the PC designated hitter. Horton reached on a two-base error by the
left fielder which put runners at second and third with one out. Bryant stepped up and scorched a ball down
the right field line to score both runners and tie the game up. The Blue Hose wanted more in the inning, but
Gabe Grammer grounded into PC's first double play of the season for the final
outs of the inning.
In the 10th,
Eastern Kentucky went quietly except for an error by PC's third baseman, Matt
Hill. The runner was stranded at first
as the EKU offense couldn't respond to PC's runs in the ninth.
Going into
the bottom of the 10th, Harmon reached on an error by the second
baseman. The ground ball by the
outfielder went through Dustin Dunlop's five-hole and into right field. Alex Loftin dropped a bunt down the third
base line to advance Harmon. The
sacrifice play was answered by an intentional walk to Carl Della Torre to put
the force in order. It was no matter as
Hill's bloop single over the second baseman's head ended the game when Harmon
beat the throw at the plate to win the game for the Blue Hose.
PC will look
to stay perfect against EKU on Saturday in the second game of the series. The game starts at Noon from the PC Baseball
Stadium.
