CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College baseball scored in the first
inning for the second time in the series but dropped the final score, 3-1 to
UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon. Prior
to the series finale, the Blue Hose honored seven seniors who are in their
final campaign at PC.
Presbyterian College (8-23, 1-8 BSC)
opened the scoring in the first with a run from Jesse Harmon. The senior reached on a walk and stole second
as part of a delayed steal play which caught Gabe Grammer out at the plate trying
to advance on Harmon's steal. Tony
Micklon cashed in the RBI when his single to right brought Harmon in to score.
UNC Asheville (11-17, 5-7 BSC) answered
with an equalizing run in the fourth to tie the score at 1-1. The Bulldogs then took the lead in the sixth
and added an insurance run in the seventh to go up 3-1.
Senior Joe Hammond went five and
two-thirds of an inning, striking out four batters and allowing two runs. He scattered six hits in the outing. He was saddled with the loss to fall to 0-4
while Justin Schumer earned the victory to improve to 1-3 on the season. Robert McIntosh earned his second save of the
season. Retiring the final three Blue Hose batters.
The PC offense came from the middle of
the order with the fourth through eighth batters each accounting for one of PC's
five hits in the game.
Presbyterian College will visit Furman
on Wednesday night for the second game of the three-game season series with the
I-385 rival. The game starts from 7 p.m.
on the campus of Furman University. Next
weekend, PC will host Charleston Southern for a three-game series.
