CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College
baseball went for double-digit scoring on the second consecutive day en route
to a 10-1 shelling of Charleston Southern, 10-1. Gabe Grammer legged out his fourth triple of
the season and the 10th of his career to become only the 21st
student-athlete in Big South Conference history to reach double digit
triples.
It was a
beautiful day in the sun for PC (11-23, 3-8 BSC) who earned its second straight
win over the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon.
After 21 hits on Friday, the Blue Hose cooled to just 13 hits on
Saturday. Grammer went 3-for-5 on the
day with two RBI while Kenny Bryant was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Blue Hose
got after Charleston Southern (15-23, 4-9 BSC) early and often with two runs in
the first inning. Mack Hite crossed
first after a single, and two wild pitches.
He scored on a sacrifice fly by Tony Micklon. The second run came as Bryant scored on a
delayed double steal with runners on first and third. Nate Horton went for second but pulled up and
got into a rundown to allow Bryant's run scoring scamper.
PC came up
flush in the third inning with seven runs in the trip to the plate. 11 batters went to the plate in the inning
which was initiated by Grammer's triple.
After a strikeout to the second batter of the inning, six straight
batters would reach safely.
Up by a 9-0
line, PC's starting pitcher, Chris Powell, went into cruise control. He went eight complete innings scattering
nine hits and conceding just one run in the eighth inning. The senior struck out a career-high nine
batters while not allowing a walk. The
win improves Powell's team-best record to 5-1.
The Blue Hose would
go into double-digit scoring in the seventh inning when Nate Horton doubled to right
field. A single moved the senior to
third base and he came home on a wild pitch.
The victory
gave head coach Elton Pollock a win over Charleston Southern on his birthday
(April 17) for the second consecutive year.
Presbyterian
College will go for the sweep against Charleston Southern on Sunday afternoon
starting at 1 p.m. from the PC Baseball Complex.
