CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College had a
strong showing on Sunday afternoon, but fell 9-8 to Charleston Southern in 10
innings at the PC Baseball Complex. Both
teams scored a run in the ninth to force extra innings, but it was CSU's
unanswered run in the 10th that clinched the victory.
For the third
consecutive game, PC (11-24, 3-9 BSC) went into double-digit hits with 12
tallies. Kenny Bryant led the way for
the Blue Hose with a 4-for-5 day with two RBI.
He came up just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Buccaneers
(16-23, 5-9 BSC) scored once in the first inning, but PC made CSU pay for a
leadoff walk to start the first inning.
Gabe Grammer was issued the free pass.
A sacrifice bunt by Mack Hite followed by the lone groundout by Bryant moved
Grammer around to third base. He was
brought home by Tony Micklon's double.
Charleston
Southern scored one in the second, but the Blue Hose answered with a three-spot
in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.
With two outs, Bryant doubled to right and was brought home by Micklon's
fourth home run of the season. Nate
Horton singled up the middle and was able to score after Aaron Preston doubled
to right center and got caught in a rundown play.
The Bucs came
back to tie the game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Charleston Southern tacked on three runs in
the sixth inning to go up by a 7-4.
The Blue Hose rallied
for three more in the seventh inning.
Jeff Tatum walked to start the inning and a single by Mack Hite put runners
on first and third. Bryant's triple down
the left field line brought both Tatum and Hite in to score. Bryant scored to tie the game up two batters
later with a single at 7-7.
In the ninth,
Charleston Southern opened the inning with a double. Two batters later, the run was brought in
with a single up the middle to give CSU an 8-7 lead.
Hite started
the ninth with a one out walk. He moved
over to third on a single by Bryant to right.
The game looked to be over when Micklon grounded into a would-be 5-4-3
double play, however, an errant throw allowed Micklon to reach after Hite
scored on the fielder's choice. The run
knotted the teams at 8-8 and forced extra innings.
A two out
double in the 10th was followed by a single to bring home the
go-ahead run for Charleston Southern.
PC looked to
answer in the bottom of the 10th with a pair of singles put Jesse
Harmon on third base and replacement third baseman Matt Hill on first
base. A fly ball to right field ended
the game and prevented the Blue Hose from equalizing for the second consecutive
inning.
Andrew Foushee
was given the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season as he worked the final out of
the ninth inning and the 10th frame.
The Blue Hose pitching staff recorded eight strikeouts on the day. Charleston Southern's Jessee Cadenhead took
the win to improve to 5-3.
Presbyterian
College baseball will return to action on Thursday evening against Furman at
the Greenville Drive Stadium. The game
from Flour Field starts at 7 p.m. Gates
