GREENVILLE, S.C.- Presbyterian College
baseball surrendered some early runs but roared back late to drop a 16-10 game
to Furman at Flour Field, home of the Greenville Drive, single-A affiliate of
the Boston Red Sox. Prior to the game,
PC's coaches appeared on the field barefooted to raise awareness for Samaritan's
Feet.
The first
three innings were rather lackluster as Furman strung together 11 runs off 13
hits and a PC error. Four came in the
first frame while five more runs went in the second before three runs crossed
in the third.
Tony Micklon
drove in PC's first run of the game when his sacrifice fly drove Mack Hite in
from third. The play drew first blood in
PC's drive to erase the Paladin's 11-0 advantage going into the inning.
A Furman run
in the fourth covered PC's scoring but thee PC tallies cut the lead back to
12-4. Gabe Grammer drove in Alex Loftin
who opened the frame with a double for PC's first run of the inning. Two batters later, Kenny Bryant pushed Matt
Hill in with a single through the left side.
The third run came as Nate Horton delivered a sacrifice fly to bring
Grammer in to score.
For the second
consecutive inning, Furman covered PC's scoring with three runs in the bottom
of the fifth.
Both teams
were quiet in the sixth before the Blue Hose erupted for six runs in the top of
the seventh inning. Bryant opened the
inning with a foul out to third base and was followed by eight consecutive
batters reaching base. The Blue Hose
scored five runs off seven hits and an error before Bryant came back to the
plate and posted a sacrifice play to right field to score PC's sixth in the
inning. A throwing error by the
shortstop allowed the runner from first base to move over to second base on the
play. The runs cut the Furman advantage
to 15-10 with two trips to the plate remaining for the Blue Hose.
The Paladins
grabbed an insurance run in the eighth to take the lead out to six runs at
16-10.
PC would put
runners on second and third base in the ninth inning, but the bats could not
produce the rally in the last inning.
Starting
pitcher Chris Powell took the loss to fall to 5-2 on the year while Furman's
Ian Parry was awarded the win to improve to 3-4 on the season. The game was PC's second longest of the
season lasting 3:15
PC returns
home on Friday to open a three-game series against Liberty. Game one of the series starts from 3 p.m. at
the PC Baseball Complex.
