CONWAY, S.C. - The Presbyterian College baseball team was unable to
grab a win on the final day of the series against No. 14 Coastal Carolina
Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-2 and 5-2.
The Blue Hose now stand at 7-20 overall and 1-5 in Big South play. The
Chanticleers improve to 23-5 on the year and 5-0 against conference
competition.
In the day's opening game, PC fell
behind early and couldn't recover against the Chanticleers. Coastal scored two in the first and third
innings and added eight in both the fourth and seventh inning along with five
runs in the sixth to post 25 runs for the game.
On the offensive side, PC more than
quadrupled the hit total from Friday night's series opener. Gabe Grammer went 3-for-4 to lead PC. Grarmmer's single to left field in the
seventh brought Derek Herron home for PC's first run. Grammer scored the Blue Hose's second run in
the ninth off a single up the middle from Alex Loftin.
Left-handed starter Steven Richardson
went three and two-thirds allowing ten runs, eight earned and took the loss for
the Blue Hose. The southpaw falls to 1-5
on the season.
The Blue Hose came out in the first with
a Gabe Grammer double to right with one away. He scampered to third on a wild
pitch, but Tony Micklon was unable to bring him home, concluding the first
frame.
PC's hurler Joe Hammond was able to retire the opposition in order in the first,
but the top-20 team was able to scratch a run in the second with a solo homer.
Hammond then settled down, retiring the next five batters.
With the score still at 1-0 in the fourth, the Chanticleers were able to push
across three runs, two of which came via the long ball.
However, the young Blue Hose would not give up. The squad got on the scoreboard
in the fifth. Carl Della Torre singled to right and came home on Aaron Preston's
RBI double to left center to make the score 4-1.
Coastal tacked on a run in the bottom half of the fifth. Then, neither team was
able to strike again until the top of the ninth.
Nate Horton singled and then Jeffrey Tatum was inserted as a pinch runner.
Micklon singled, putting runners on the first two bases. With two away, Della
Torre singled home Tatum to make the score 5-2. After a change in pitchers,
Harmon was unable to keep the rally going for head coach Elton Pollock's team.
Hammond took the loss despite pitching a solid seven frames. He gave up five
runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out four and walked one. Drew Wingo
pitched the eighth stanza. He allowed a hit, but also struck out one.
Grammer and Della Torre each wrapped out two hits on the offensive front.
PC's next game is a home contest against
its I-26 rival USC Upstate on Wednesday afternoon. The game starts at 3 p.m. from the PC
Baseball Complex.
