Grammer?s 13th Inning Longball Lifts PC Over Winthrop, 8-7

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Presbyterian College baseball needed 13 innings to take an 8-7 win over Winthrop on Sunday afternoon in Rock Hill.  Gabe Grammer scored the opening run, but more importantly it was his 13th inning leadoff home run that put the Blue Hose ahead for good.  The win puts PC just one win away from matching its 2008 and 2009 win totals.

The Blue Hose (12-30, 4-14 BSC) were quick out of the gate with five runs in the first three innings to rush out to a quick 5-0 lead over Winthrop (21-21, 9-9 BSC).

PC took advantage of an inning opening walk to Grammer to go up, 1-0.  Grammer stole second and was bunted to third before coming home on Bryant's RBI ground out.

In the second, Jesse Harmon singled to open the inning and later came home on Jeff Tatum's squeeze bunt single to score PC's second run of the game.  Later in the inning, Bryant brought Grammer and Mack Hite home for the second and third runs of the inning to go up 4-0.  The hit extended Bryant's hit streak to 15 games.

The fifth run of the game came just an inning later in the third frame.  Aaron Preston mashed his sixth home run of the season and second of the weekend to straight-away center field.

The Eagles answered with a run in the third to cut the margin back to 5-1 after three complete innings.  The breakthrough came as Matt Thielepape hit a solo home run.

PC's sixth run of the game came in the fifth inning after both teams went quietly in the fourth frame.  Bryant ripped a leadoff home run over the right field fence.  After five innings, Bryant posted four RBI in three at bats.

The Eagles rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, followed by three more runs in the sixth inning to draw even at 6-6.

To open the seventh inning, PC re-took the lead with a single run in the frame.  Bryant nailed a one-out double to right center to get quickly into scoring position.  He came home later in the inning off an RBI single by Preston.  With three regulation frames left, Bryant was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.  The RBI was Preston's second of the game.

Winthrop re-tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Thielepape hit his second home run of the game to center field.

The Blue Hose were scoreless in the top of the ninth inning.  In the bottom of the inning, Grammer was given the nod to shut down the Eagles.  The sophomore successfully made the move from shortstop to the mound and worked around a two-out triple to keep the Eagles scoreless and force the game into extra innings.

In the first three extra innings, the biggest scoring chance came for Winthrop in the 12th inning.  After a leadoff triple, Chas Crane moved over to third base on a wild pitch.  The winning run was stranded just 90 feet away as Steven Richardson atoned for his wildness to strike out the side.

As the 13th inning got underway, Grammer hit a 3-2 home run to right field to give PC a 8-7 lead.  The run would prove to be the game winner as Rodney Scruggs held Winthrop scoreless in the final half inning to close out the Blue Hose victory.

Richardson took the victory to go to 3-6.  He threw a third of an inning, using six pitches to take the victory.  Rodney Scruggs nailed down his first save of the season, dismissing the Eagles in the 13th inning.  Winthrop's Tommy Lawrence took the loss to fall to 2-3.

The game, clocking in at 4:23 was PC's longest of the season by just under an hour's time.  It was also the second game of the series to last over three hours after game one lasted 3:33.

PC will visit Radford this weekend for a three-game series against the Highlanders.  The Big South showdown starts on Friday afternoon from 3 p.m.
