RADFORD, Va. - For the second consecutive
game, Presbyterian College baseball went to extra innings in a Big South game,
but the Blue Hose ultimately fell, 7-6 in 12 innings to Radford on Friday
afternoon. PC took the lead in the top
of the 12th but gave up two runs to fall to 12-31 while Radford
improves to 24-20. The extra innings
game was PC's third in the last five outings.
Starting
pitcher Chris Powell worked a clean opening two innings before Radford struck
first for three runs in the third inning.
A one out double down the left field line brought the first two runs
in. A single to center brought the third
run in and gave the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.
In the top of
the fourth, PC tried to muster an answer but came up short, stranding two
runners in scoring position. Mack Hite
opened the frame with PC's first hit of the day and two more followed in the
inning.
The Blue Hose
got off the mark in the sixth inning when Kenny Bryant's sacrifice fly brought
Gabe Grammer in to score. However, in
the bottom of the inning, Radford added an unearned run to take the lead back
to three runs at 4-1.
Two innings
later in the eighth inning, PC struck back for two runs. The first came in as Hite came in off a wild
pitch. The run was Hite's second of the
game. After a pitching change, Nate
Horton brought Bryant in to cut the lead down to just one run.
In the bottom
of the eighth, Radford extended the lead back to 5-3 with a two-out RBI double
to right center.
A ninth inning
rally was needed for the Blue Hose to stay alive. Pinch hitter Ryan Morris opened the inning by
getting hit by the third pitch of the final stanza. He was replaced at first base by Alex
Loftin. Gabe Grammer pounded out a
double to left center to plate Loftin and draw just one run behind the
Highlanders. Grammer moved over to third
on Hite's groundout for the first out of the inning. The next batter, Tony Micklon beat out
Radford's attempt at a 6-4-3 double play to prolong the inning as Grammer
crossed home to tie the game at 5-5.
Powell went a
strong eight innings before being lifted to open the bottom of the ninth
inning. He allowed five runs, four
earned off 12 hits. He struck out two
and walked two but did not factor in the decision because he left the game at a
tie.
Andrew Foushee
recorded the first out on the hill for PC before making way for Jordan
Pace. Pace dismissed the final two outs
but not with a little drama after a runner reached third base on a wild pitch.
Both teams
were quiet in the 10th inning but it was Radford who loaded the
bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th. Steven Richardson got the call to replace
Rodney Scruggs on the mound. A snap
throw from Nate Horton behind the plate picked off the runner at third
base. Richardson would then induce a fly
ball to left field for the final out.
After a
leadoff pop out to open the 12th, Horton made his second big play in
a span of 10 minutes by bashing a home run to right field and giving PC its
first lead of the game. Two successive
outs sent the game to the bottom of the 12th with PC up 6-5.
A pair of
inning opening doubles knotted the teams again at 6-6. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third,
followed by a pair of intentional walks to load the bases with one out. The winning run came in off an RBI single to
right field gave Radford the 7-6 victory.
Richardson was
saddled with the loss to drop the sophomore to 3-7 on the season. He tossed an inning allowing the two runs off
three hits. Radford's Jason Patten takes
the win to improve to 5-2.
There were a
combined 31 hits in the game which only yielded 13 runs. PC left 10 runners on base as compared to
Radford's nine stranded.
The series
continues on Saturday afternoon with game two between the Blue Hose and
Highlanders. Game two starts at 2 p.m.
with game three starting on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
