RADFORD, Va. - Presbyterian College
Baseball carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but five
Radford runs gave the Highlanders a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon. PC led for the first five innings before
Radford equalized in the sixth. The Blue
Hose re-took the lead in the seventh before surrendering five in the eighth.
The Blue Hose
(12-33, 4-17 BSC) were the beneficiary of two errors in the first inning to
take a 2-0 lead after the first half of an inning. Mack Hite reached with one out on a fielding
error by the third baseman. He stole
second before Kenny Bryant walked. The
next batter, Tony Micklon, grounded to third base, but reached on the fielder's
choice. A pair of errors on the third
baseman allowed Bryant to reach third and Hite to score PC's first run. Nate Horton's 5-3 groundout brought Bryant
home to give the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead.
Radford (26-20,
12-8 BSC) tied the game in the sixth inning with two runs in the frame. A sacrifice fly with runners on the corners
brought the first run in but a triple to right center off the bat of Matt Mack
plated the runner from first to knot the teams at 2-2.
With runners on
second and third in the top of the seventh, Hite's one-out groundout to second
base brought Aaron Preston in to score and give the Blue Hose a 3-2 lead.
The Radford
offense came to life in the bottom of the eighth inning to run out to a 7-3
lead with just a half inning to play.
Rodney Scruggs gave up four runs in the inning, recording two outs in
the process. Drew Wingo relieved Scruggs
and surrendered the fifth run of the inning.
The Blue Hose
offense went quiet in the ninth inning as Radford earned the three-game sweep
over the Blue Hose.
Scruggs got
his first decision of the season, taking the loss to fall to 0-1 on the
year. Joe Hammond got the start and worked
the first five and a third, allowing the two runs off six hits while striking
out three batters. Radford's Abram
Williams took the win to go to 3-1 on the year.
Radford
stymied PC to just five hits on the day.
There were six combined errors on the day with four being charged
against the Highlanders and only two blemishes on PC's ledger.

against the Duke Blue Devils. The
