GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Presbyterian College volleyball team dropped the
first set that went to extra points to Furman Tuesday evening - and the team
was unable to win a set in the 3-0 loss (26-28, 16-25, 17-25) to the host
Paladins in the season-opening match.
The Blue Hose now stand at 0-1 on the season while the Paladins improve to 1-2.
Leading the way for the Blue Hose was senior Amanda Kettles. She netted seven
kills, had an ace and a block for nine points. She and redshirt-senior Kilee
Ruppe had the only two solo blocks for PC. Ruppe dished out a team-best 24
assists for the night. Carolyn Fabros chipped in an ace while Elizabeth
Heineman notched two.
Ashley Dunlap recorded a match-high nine digs in the losing effort.
In the opening set, the visitors held an early 9-6 lead after Fabros' ace
completed a 3-0 spurt. Furman battled back to notch the score only to have
Presley Mabrey smash a pass from Ruppe for a 15-13 advantage. The Paladins took
the lead, but it was short lived as Mabrey once again slammed home the ball
from Ruppe, tying the score at 23.
PC took the lead 24-23 on Kettles' ace. Furman scored three of the next four
points for a 26-25 lead. Facing set point, the Paladins' misfired on an attack,
tying the score. Back-to-back miscues by PC allowed Furman to take the first
set 28-26.
After leading 2-1 in the second set, Furman replied by scoring four of the next
six points for a 5-3 lead. PC tried to counter, but the team saw Furman reel
off nine out of 11 points for a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the
set. The Paladins took control, winning 25-16.
The Blue Hose fell behind 1-0 in what turned out to be the final set, but
countered with back-to-back points on back-to-back errors by Furman. Tied at
four, the Paladins used a 4-0 run for an 8-4 lead. The teams traded the next
eight points before the home team widened the lead with a three-point mini run.
No matter how many good shots PC put forth, Furman was able to maintain its
advantage for the 25-17 victory.
As a team, PC connected for 28 kills, but hit just .066 after committing 22
errors.
PC returns to action Friday in Macon, Ga., at the Bear Brawl. Head coach Chris
Belshe's team will take on host Mercer at 1 p.m., followed by The Citadel at 5
p.m.
