Furman used a balanced attack with 43 kills and just 11 errors to sweep the Presbyterian College volleyball team, 3-0, tonight in front of a packed house of 1,013 fans at Templeton Arena. The Paladins won by scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-12.
PC dropped to 0-2 on the young season while Furman won its third in a row to go to 3-1.
The first game was a close one early as PC found itself down by just one, at 11-12. Furman used two kills by Chandler Ambrester, who led Furman with 10 on the night, and a couple of PC errors, to score six straight points en route to a 13-3 run, taking the first game, 25-14.
The second game was a back-and-forth battle, as the Blue Hose built a six-point lead, 15-9, off three kills from Caroline Cann (Landrum, S.C.), who had nine on the night. Furman responded, and down, 17-19, scored four unanswered to take the lead, 21-19. PC kept the margin close but the Paladins posted kills in the final two of three points to take the 25-23 win.
PC had trouble finding rhythm in the third game and fell early, 5-14. The Blue Hose cut the margin to 10-17 with four straight points, capped off by a block from Kelly Berryman (Normal, Ill.) and Allison Brown (Plano, Texas). PC only scored two more points after that as Furman rattled off eight to take the 25-12 win for the sweep.
Leading PC in kills was Presley Mabrey (Lyman, S.C.), followed by Cann with her nine. Following Furman's Ambrester and her 10 kills was Caroline Adams with nine. PC posted 30 kills and 22 errors for a .088 hitting percentage, while Furman ended with a .372 hitting percentage.
Presbyterian College takes to the road for the next six matches, starting in Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Tournament. The Blue Hose take on Arizona Friday, Sept. 2 at 12:30 p.m. before facing Eastern Washington at 6:30 p.m. Cal State Fullerton and PC meet Saturday, Sept. 3 at 12:30 in the final match of the tournament.
