CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team
rolled to its second sweep in as many days and moved to 4-1 in the Big South Conference
with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-21) blanking of visiting UNC Asheville on Saturday
afternoon.
PC improves to 7-13 on the year and 4-1 in league play, tied
for the conference lead. UNC Asheville falls to 6-15 and 2-3 in Big South
action.
Leading the Blue Hose were Presley Mabrey (Lyman, S.C.) with
14 kills and Rachel Hall (Roswell, Ga.) with 13. Ashtin Frank (Bloomington,
Ill.) added 45 assists, while Mary Trimpe (Normal, Ill.) recorded 15 digs to
lead PC and move into third place in program history in that category.
Christine Lakatos led the Bulldogs with nine kills, while Anna
Moore added eight.
The Blue Hose led
offensively with 48 kills, compared to 35 for Asheville. PC came away with a .327
attack percentage, while the Bulldogs were at .194.
After a see-saw
battle in the early goings of the first game PC found itself down 9-13 after
UNC Asheville recorded two kills and capitalized on two PC attack errors,
already leading 9-8. The Blue Hose rallied off two service aces and a Hall kill,
one of her team-leading six in the set, to tie the game at 14-14.
PC and UNC Asheville
went back and forth the remainder of the game, with no team taking more than a
one-point lead at a given time. That changed after a 21-21 tie when Brown
recorded a kill and Mabrey added an ace to take a 23-21 lead, forcing a Bulldog
timeout. Two PC attack errors later, one off an Asheville block, and the game was
tied at 23-23.
Tied again at 24-24,
Barman unloaded two straight kills to give PC the 26-24 game one win.
Tied 5-5 in game two,
PC used three kills by Elizabeth Miler (Summerville, S.C.) and a kill by Mabrey
to open a 9-5 lead. PC maintained a multiple-point margin until a kill by Holly
Shelton made it a one-point, 11-12 game. Asheville tied the game on several
occasions and, tied 18-18, took a 20-18 lead off back-to-back kills.
The Bulldogs took the two-point lead again at 22-20 before
PC retook the lead, utilizing kills from Mabrey and Hall to give the Blue Hose
the 25-21 game two win.
Seven kills by the Blue Hose, including three by Hall, led
PC to the early 10-6 lead in game three. Hall added two more as the home team
used a 4-1 run and extend its lead to seven, 14-7.
Trailing 9-16, UNCA scored four straight, capitalizing on
two kills by Shelton, to cut the deficit to three, 13-16. A UNCA service error
and attack error gave the Blue Hose a four point, 18-14 lead, however. PC
extended the lead to 19-15 off a Barman kill.
The Bulldogs made it a one-point, 20-21 game, before a
Mabrey kill made it 22-20. Leading 23-21, PC took advantage of a kill by Brown
and an ace by Trimpe, her third of the match, to take the 25-21 game and match.
The Blue Hose stay at home for their next two matches,
beginning with a Friday night contest against Campbell at 7 p.m. before a
Saturday night Homecoming tilt against High Point at 7.
