The Blue Hose rallied from a two-game deficit and had game-point in the fourth but could not break through, as the Presbyterian College volleyball team dropped a close, 3-1 loss to Winthrop in the regular season and home finale at Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C. Winthrop won by scores of 25-22, 25-21, 23-25 and 27-25.
PC dropped to 12-17 overall and 9-5 in the Big South, while Winthrop improved to 14-15, 8-6.
Leading PC was Presley Mabrey with 19 kills and Andrea Barman with 12. Allison Brown followed with 10 on the night. Ashtin Frank ended the night with 47 assists while Mary Trimpe had 26 digs, followed by 23 from Mabrey. Leading Winthrop was Rachel Lenz with 18 kills and Jennica Mullins with 15. Stephanie Palmer added 33 assists while Catherine Brusie had 27 digs.
PC recorded 60 kills and 27 errors for a .179 hitting percentage. The Blue Hose finished with 56 total assists, 87 digs and 9.0 total blocks. Winthrop ended with 61 kills and 21 errors for a .221 hitting percentage. The Eagles tallied 56 assists, 87 digs and 9.0 total blocks as well
Tied 5-5 early in game one, Winthrop capitalized on a Lenz kill and two attack errors by PC to jump out to an 8-5 lead. The lead was short-lived as Barman posted back-to-back kills to lead the Blue Hose back on top 9-8. From there it was a back and forth battle with the Eagles eventually taking a 15-12 lead off another Lenz kill and two more PC errors, which forced a PC timeout.
The Blue Hose came out of the timeout with a kill by Hall to make it 15-12 Winthrop used two more kills to lead 19-15 before two straight Barman kills cut the margin to two, 19-17. After Amy Zimmer and Mullins gave Winthrop a 21-17 lead, PC stormed back with a kill by Barman and two by Mabrey and trailed by just one, 21-20. A service error by PC made the score 23-21 before taking advantage of an Eagle attack error to cut the margin to 23-22. Winthrop earned the 25-22 game one win as Mullins posted two straight kills to end the PC rally.
Winthrop built a five-point lead on several occasions in game two, the last coming at 15-10 when Barman used two straight kills to cut the margin to three at 15-12. Winthrop made it 16-12 before a service error and Frank kill cut the lead to two, 16-14. Barman came through with a block, while Mabrey followed it up with a kill as the Blue Hose tied the game at 16-16, forcing a Winthrop timeout.
The Eagle quickly went back up 18-16 off a kill by Kristin Cruse and a PC attack error before the Blue Hose evened it up again with kills by Mabrey and Hall. Tied again at 19-19, Winthrop went back up 20-19 off a Mullins kill.
Winthrop went up by two again at 22-20, taking advantage of kills by Stephanie Palmer and Lenz. PC called a timeout and came out with a kill by Hall to cut it to 22-21. That would be as close as the Blue Hose would get as Winthrop fired back with kills by Palmer and Zimmer and a block by Zimmer and Carolyn Weed to give the Eagles the 25-21 game two win.
Game three was close from the start with five ties early. Tied 15-15, Winthrop recorded two straight points off kills by Mullins and Palmer to go up 17-15. The Eagles went up 19-16 before kills by Brown and Mabrey made it 19-18. After a Lenz kill, PC's Kelly Berryman recorded a kill of her own and Mabrey followed it with an ace to tie the game yet again at 20-20. Another Mabrey ace and PC took a 21-20 lead, forcing a Winthrop timeout. It was short-lived as Palmer's kill tied the game at 21-21.
Lenz took Winthrop up 22-21 before Berryman answered with a kill to tie the game up at 22-22. The Blue Hose took the 24-22 lead, its biggest of the game, off kills by Miler and Brown, before a PC service error made it 24-23 in favor of the Blue Hose. Winthrop hit the next attack out of bounds to hand PC the 25-23 game three win.
PC opened game four with a 3-0 run, based in part on a kill and block by Brown. The Eagles fought back with two Lenz kills and another by Zimmer to take a 5-4 lead before another Brown kill tied the game at 5-5. The Eagles re-took the lead off another Zimmer kill and extended their lead to 10-7, before PC rallied with two Mabrey kills and one by Berryman to tied the match at 10-10. After Mabrey made it 11-10, Winthrop knotted it back with a Mullins block. The Eagles scored the next four of five points off two service aces and two PC attack errors to go up 15-11 before the Blue Hose called a timeout.
Winthrop extended its lead to 18-14 before PC rallied to tie the game at 19-19, helped in part by two Barman kills and a Winthrop attack error. Tied again at 20-20, PC took the 21-21 lead off Mabrey hit the kill off the Frank assist.
After a Winthrop timeout, PC increased its lead to 23-20 off a Winthrop attack error and a Mabrey kill. Winthrop fought back and tied it at 23-23. An attack error gave Winthrop a 24-23 lead but Frank came back to tie it at 24-24, while a Winthrop error gave the Blue Hose the game point at 25-24. Kills by Cruse and Mullins gave Winthrop the edge again at 26-25 before an attack error by PC gave the Eagles the 27-25 game four and match win.
PC rounds out the regular season and will await word on the opponent it will face in the Big South tournament to be held Nov. 15-18 in Boiling Springs on the campus of Gardner Webb.
