Furman Edges PC Baseball, 7-5

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Presbyterian College baseball team scored a season-high five runs on Tuesday night against Furman, but the Paladins held off the Blue Hose, 7-5.

PC moves to 0-4 on the year. Furman improves to 2-2.

Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) went two-for-four from the plate and four different members of the Blue Hose picked up an RBI. Freshman Cam McRae (Darlington, SC.) hit PC's first home run of the season with a solo shot in the ninth, a play that also doubled as his first collegiate hit.

Freshman lefthander Michael Ricchi (McKinney, Texas)  took the mound for the start and received the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over four innings of work.

Furman posted two runs in the first, knocking in three hits and scoring the second run of the inning on a balk. The Paladins also got one in the second, taking advantage of a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to lead after two, 3-0.

In the third, Matt Peded (Fountain Inn, S.C.) singled up the middle and moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.). Andrew Williams (Augusta, Ga.) then looped a single over the head of first baseman Taylor Johnson that fell just fair to score Peden and put PC on the scoreboard, 3-1.

Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) ripped a pitch through the right side of the infield on a hit-and-run to move Williams to third and put runners at the corners. Two wild pitches scored Wiliams and allowed Lizanich to move to third before a sacrifice fly to centerfield from Tony Micklon (Sumter, S.C.) brought Lizanich home to tie up the game, 3-3.

Furman struck again in the fourth, after a leadoff double to right and a triple to left put one on and one in with nobody out. Ricchi got out of the jam, however, getting Will Owens to line into a 6-5 double play on a full count.

Buck Mosteller (Woodruff, S.C.) entered the game in the fifth and shut down the Paladins in the fifth and sixth.

Williams offered the crowd a highlight-reel catch at second base with a diving stop in the fifth to secure the second out and keep the bases clear.

PC put runners on first and second in the seventh thanks to a hit and an error with only one away, but the Blue Hose could not convert as the two sides held into the seventh inning stretch with Furman ahead, 4-3.

Furman used two walks in the seventh two score two runs and bring Chad Sanders into the game. The Paladins tagged Sanders for a single and brought in one more to take a 7-3 lead after seven.

PC loaded the bases with one out in the eighth for Robby Swab (Kemersville, S.C.). The catcher lifted a deep fly ball to centerfield that stayed in play for a sacrifice fly RBI.

Furman nearly got the run back in the eighth but Micklon gunned down the runner at home from left field to keep the deficit at three.

In the ninth, McRae strode to the plate as a pinch hitter and knocked his first collegiate hit over the left field fence for a solo home run, getting PC to 7-4. Furman would hold on for the win from there, 7-4.

PC hits the road this weekend for a three-game series at Mercer that begins on Friday at 4 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
