CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's basketball
team set a new program record for the most points in a Big South Conference
game with a milestone-filled effort as the Blue Hose knocked off VMI on
Thursday night at Templeton Center, 94-74.
PC wins its third straight to improve to 11-13 overall and
5-9 in the Big South. The Blue Hose will look to make it four in a row on
Saturday in the Senior Night home finale when the squad hosts Liberty at 7 p.m.
VMI moves to 12-12 on the year and 7-7 in Big South play.
Al'Lonzo Coleman (Charlotte, N.C.), Khalid Mutakabbir
(Suwanee, Ga.) and Josh Johnson (Hendersonville, Tenn.) all scored at least 20
points against the Keydets, marking the first time three Blue Hose cracked the
20-point barrier in PC's Division I history.
Coleman posted his third straight double-double with 26
points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs. The redshirt senior also cracked 1,400
points for his career on the evening with his 18th point early in
the second half. The double-double gives him his eighth for the season and 23rd for
his career.
Mutakabbir reached a milestone of his own, scoring his 1,000th
point with a jumper in the lane that put PC up 15-10 at the 13:40 mark. The
junior finished with 20 points and became the second Blue Hose in the Division
I era and the 21st under head coach Gregg Nibert to reach the
1,000-point plateau.
Johnson scored 22 points for the Blue Hose on the evening,
two shy of his career high. Johnson hit a team-high four three pointers on the
night.
PC shot a season-best 59.6 percent from the floor
(34-for-57), buoyed by a 69.2 shooting percentage (18-for-26) in the second
half. The Blue Hose also outscored VMI in the paint 48-20 and out-rebounded the
Keydets by a 35-24 margin.
PC's 94 points eclipsed the program's previous-highest total
in a Big South game, set when the Blue Hose scored 92 at VMI on December 4,
2010.
Keith Gabriel led VMI with 18 points. Stan Okoye led the
Keydets on the boards with seven rebounds.
The Blue Hose raced to a fast start thanks to nine
consecutive points from Josh Johnson in the first eight minutes. Down 6-2,
Johnson hit three straight three-pointers to kick-start a 19-10 PC run that led to a 27-12 lead with 10:25 left in the first. Johnson
capped the run with another trey, bringing his total to four in the first half.
VMI cut into the PC lead but the Blue Hose responded. Coleman
caught Johnson for the team lead in first-half points (12) to keep PC ahead and
push the home team's lead back to a first-half high 17 at the 6:24 mark.
After a Keith Gabriel trey and an Stan Okoye free throw,
Coleman hit a free throw and Pierre Miller (Warner Robbins, Ga.) finished a
drive to the hoop to extend the Blue Hose lead to 39-23 with 4:30 before
halftime. Miller finished the game with a game-high five assists.
The Blue Hose lead stayed in double digits but the Keydets
scored five unanswered points when trailing 44-28 to pull within 11 heading
into the locker room at halftime, 44-33.
VMI cut the PC advantage into single digits on a Gabriel
three shortly after halftime, but four straight from Mutakabbir pushed PC's
lead back over 10.
VMI would get within nine on an Okoye trey one minute later but would come no closer. Coleman began a steady stream of scoring that helped
the Blue Hose go back up by 15 with 13:30 left in the game. The PC center
matched his output from the first half 7:05 into the second, reaching 24 points
with 12:55 remaining.
The Blue Hose kept the pressure on as their lead hovered
around 15 before a Mutakabbir jumper extended the advantage to 21 at the 5:48
mark, their then-biggest lead of the game.
Mutakabbir provided another highlight reel play with a steal
and a vicious dunk to make the score 86-65 with 4:40 to go.
Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md.) hit a three-pointer 17 seconds
later to push PC's lead to 24 points, their biggest lead of the night.
PC put an exclamation point on the win in the final seconds
when Mac Lake (Prosperity, S.C.) lobbed an alley-oop pass to Joshua Clyburn
(Charlotte, N.C.), who slammed it home to bring the crowd to its feet and seal
the win.
