GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team
looked poised for another comeback win against the Wofford Terriers on Thursday
night at Fluor Field, but a late rally came one run shy as the Blue Hose fell,
5-4.
PC moves to 5-10 on the year and sees a four-game winning
streak end. Wofford improves to 7-6.
Kenny Bryant (Goose Creek, S.C.) hit his third straight home
run with a two-run shot to right field in the eighth inning. Tony Micklon (Sumter,
S.C.) and Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) each collected an RBI as well. Five
different Blue Hose posted a hit on the evening.
Starting lefthander Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) went six
innings and allowed five hits, striking out five. All five runs off of the
freshman came in the third inning.
In the teams' first meeting on February 29, PC rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win, 8-5, and came close to repeating the feat.
The Blue Hose cashed in on an error in the eighth to kick-start
a late rally. Down 5-1, Grammer reached first after getting plunked by a pitch
and moved to second on a groundout, followed by an errant throw from short in
an attempt to get Micklon out at first. Grammer scored on the play to pull PC
within three, 5-2.
With one on and one out, Bryant got another crack at an
earlier out that fell a few feet shy of the fence. The senior didn't miss this time, lifting a deep
fly ball over the right field fence to cut Wofford's lead to one, 5-4.
PC put the tying run 90 feet away in the top of the ninth.
Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) entered the game as a pinch-hitter and smacked a
pitch back up the middle for a single. Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) stole
second and used a sacrifice bunt to move to third, but a strikeout ended the
game and gave Wofford the win.
Brandon Yarusi earned the win for Wofford, allowing one run
and three hits over seven innings. Eric Eck picked up the save.
Wofford threatened early, putting a runner on third with one
out in the second inning. Dees escaped the jam, however, getting a strikeout
and a pop-up to end the inning unscathed.
The Terriers grabbed the game's first lead with five runs in
the third. Matt Moore led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt, then stole third and crossed the plate on a bunt single to put Wofford ahead,
1-0. Wofford then loaded the bases with one out and capitalized on a sacrifice fly
to go up by two.
A walk loaded the bases for the Terriers and a Taylor Rozier
bloop single to center brought around two more to extend Wofford's lead to 4-0.
A double steal and a safe play at the plate gave Wofford a 5-0 advantage and a
strikeout ended the scoring.
The Blue Hose loaded the bases in the fifth but scored only
one. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) singled to lead off the inning and Robby Swab
(Kernersville, N.C.) walked. A Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) bunt put the runners
on second and third and a walk loaded the bases full of Blue Hose.
Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) came to the plate and fell behind
in the count, but the senior battled back to draw a bases loaded walk that gave
PC its first run, 5-1. A strikeout left the bases loaded as the game headed
into the bottom of the fifth with PC trailing to set up the eventual comeback bid.
PC returns home to host NJIT in a three-game series. The
series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
