HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team
dropped the first game of its weekend series against High Point on Friday, 5-1.
PC moves to 14-21 on the year and 2-8 in Big South
Conference play. High Point improves to 22-14 and 7-3.
The two teams combined for nine hits on the night, three
coming from PC and six from High Point. Pitcher Ryan Retz threw a complete game
for the Panthers.
Andrew Williams (Augusta, Ga.) posted two of PC's hits, while Billy
Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) added the other hit and drove in a run.
PC starting pitcher Bud Jeter (Columbia, S.C.) pitched six
and one-third innings, allowing five runs on five hits. High Point notched two
runs in the first and three in the seventh to take the win.
The Panthers opened the game by using a leadoff walk and a
single to set up a Sal Pezzino two-run double, giving the home side a 2-0 lead.
From there, Jeter turned in 1-2-3 innings in the third, fourth,
fifth and sixth to keep High Point's lead to a minimum.
The Blue Hose struck in the sixth as Williams led off with
a double to right field. The redshirt junior took third on a fly ball and came
home on a deep sacrifice fly from Motroni. The play cut High Point's lead to
one run, 2-1.
High Point tallied three runs in the seventh to lead by the
eventual final score, 5-1. The Panthers used a bunt, a double and a single for
their advantage, including scoring its two final runs with two outs.
Chad Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and Chad White (Suwanee, Ga.) shut
down the High Point offense from there, but the Blue Hose nine could not find
another run.
The two sides meet for the second game of the series on
Saturday at 6 p.m.
