Billy Motroni hit a two-RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and give the Presbyterian College baseball team the 3-1 win over Campbell in the second game of a doubleheader this evening at Taylor Field in Buies Creek, N.C.
PC improved to 24-30 overall and 10-13 in the Big South. The win gives the Blue Hose their most league victories in conference history, eclipsing the record of nine, set last season. Campbell dropped to 39-16, 14-9.
Campbell got on the board early, notching a run in the bottom of the first, after opening the inning with back-to-back singles. Jake Kirkland, two batters later, singled to right field and drove in Ben McQuown, who had a base hit through the left side his time at the plate.
The next six innings were quiet until Kenny Bryant tied the game in the top of the eighth with his second home run in as many games, this one a solo shot over the right field wall, to make it a 1-1 game.
The Blue Hose opened the ninth inning with back-to-back singles to put runners in scoring position. After Gabe Grammer struck out Motroni stepped up to the plate and knocked a two-RBI single through the left side to give PC he 3-1 lead.
Grammer came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning, striking out one en route to retiring the side and picking up his ninth save of the year.
Chandler Knox started for the Blue Hose and pitched a solid 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and giving up one run. Tim Corbin came in relief and threw 1.0 inning and surrendering just one hit to earn his second win of the season (2-0).
Ryan Mattes (4-3) picked up the loss in 1.2 innings of work after giving up two runs off three hits.
Motroni led PC with a one-for-four effort with two RBI. Jay Lizanich went three-for four.
PC and Campbell take to the field in the third and final game of the series Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
