Down two sets to one, the Presbyterian College volleyball team rallied back to force a fifth set, and take the eventual 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-9) win over Campbell in Big South volleyball action tonight in Buies Creek, N.C.
The Blue Hose improve to 6-15 overall and 4-2 in the Big South, while Campbell drops to 11-11, 2-4. PC heads up the road to High Point Saturday, Oct. 19, to take on the Panthers at 2 p.m.
Leading the Blue Hose was Andrea Barman with 16 kills, followed by Rachel Hall with 14 and Halle Tripp with 12. Hall was just two from her career-high of 18 in the win. Ashtin Frank posted 40 assists and 21 digs, while Mary Trimpe added a career-high 38 digs.
The Blue Hose posted a match-leading 61 kills and hit a .155, while Campbell recorded 51 kills for a .155 hitting percentage as well. PC held the advantage in blocks, 9-5, with Kelly Berryman pacing PC with four block assists.
Leading Campbell was Katelyn Layden with 16 kills and Lindsey Coats with 12.
Tied 9-9 in the first set, Campbell went on a 5-1 run, off two kills from Coats and another from Layden, to take a 14-10 lead. It was short-lived as the Blue Hose rattled off seven straight, which included two services aces from Trimpe, to take a 17-14 lead.
Campbell tied the set at 18-18 off a Jessica Groen kill, but successful attacks from Lena Gavin and Halle Tripp gave PC the 20-18 lead. The Camels cut the lead to one at 21-20, but two kills from Hall, as well as a block from Hall and Berryman, helped PC hold on to the lead and take the 25-22 set one win.
The Camels came out firing in the second set, building a 13-4 lead after capitalizing on seven PC errors. The Blue Hose cut the lead to seven, 15-8, but that is as close as they would get as Campbell recorded a .267 hitting percentage to PC at bay and take the 25-15 second set win.
In a close third set, PC held a slim 12-11 lead after using kills from Hall and Barman, as well as back to back ones from Tripp, The lead was short-lived after two straight attack errors, one coming off a block from Heather Wilson and Coats, gave Campbell the 13-12 lead.
The Blue Hose and Camels battled back and for the next several points with both teams tying the set on multiple occasions. With the score 16-16, Campbell went on a 4-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Blue Hose fought back to tie the set at 21-21 off a Barman kill and ace, as well as a block by Gavin. Two straight kills by Alexis Hein gave the Camels a 24-21 lead before PC used two Campbell errors to cut the margin to one, 24-23. Layden ended the rally with a kills to give CU the 25-23 set three win.
The Blue Hose opened up a 9-4 lead to open the fourth set, before Campbell fought back to tie it up at 14-14, even taking the 15-14 lead off a PC serving error. The Blue Hose scored the next four, helped in part to two kills from Barman, to take back the lead, 18-15.
PC held at least a three-point margin down the stretch, the exception at 23-21 off a Coats kill. Frank set up set point with a kill, while Hall finished the Camels off with a kill of her own the next point as the Blue Hose came away with the 25-21,win, forcing a decisive fifth set.
The Blue Hose took the early 7-3 lead in the fifth set and extended it to an 11-7 margin off kills from Barman and Frank. CU cut the lead to two at 11-9 but PC went back up by four, 13-9, off a Hall kill and block. After a bad set by Campbell, Barman ended the match with a kill to give PC the 15-9 set and match win.
