SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Presbyterian College baseball team
dropped the series finale of its season-opening set at Savannah State on
Sunday, 8-4.
PC moves to 1-3 on the season and will travel to USC Upstate
on Wednesday. First pitch in Spartanburg is slated for 4 p.m. Savannah State
improves to 3-1.
The Blue Hose took a look at the team's arms today, throwing
seven pitchers for at least one inning of action each. Freshman Connor Bishop
(Perry, Fla.) took the loss on one inning of one-run ball in the fourth.
Savannah State scored seven runs between the third and fifth
innings to take the win.
Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) went 2-for-5 on the
afternoon while six other Blue Hose each hit safely once. Brandon Paul (Augusta,
Ga.) and Martin each registered an RBI.
Paul put the Blue Hose ahead early, driving in Nathan Chong
(Duluth, Ga.) on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
PC would hold the 1-0 lead thanks to hitless innings from
freshman Brett Byrum (Rowlett, Texas) and Tim Corbin (Murrells Inlet, S.C.).
Byrum made his first collegiate start on Sunday, striking out one and walking
another without allowing a hit.
The Blue Hose struck for three more runs in the third after
leaving the bases loaded in the second. A Martin single and a Savannah State
outfield error led to a three-run play that brought around Martin, Brad Zebedis
(Rock Hill, S.C.) and Paul to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
Savannah State would use four hits and two errors in the
bottom of the frame to pull even. Three of the runs stood as earned for Ryan
Morris (Jamestown, R.I.). Mendez Elder hit a two-run double in the inning while
two other runs came home as a result of an error.
The Tigers manufactured another run in the fourth inning.
Antoni Scott stole two of his four bases in the frame before scoring a single to
left field as Savannah State led, 5-4.
Two more runs in the fifth off of a Parker Nix double and
one more in the eighth gave Savannah State its 8-4 win.
Freshman Trey Hayes (Belton, S.C.) made his collegiate debut
and pitched his first collegiate inning before Kelly Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) thew an inning of shutout ball.
Michael Ricchi (McKinney, Texas) struck out two in one
inning of work while Chad Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) pitched the final
inning and gave up one run on two hits.
