SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team
dropped a road contest to the USC Upstate Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at
Harley Park, 5-2.
PC slips to 1-4 on the year while Upstate improves to 2-1.
The Blue Hose head to North Carolina Central this weekend for a three-game
series that begins on Friday at 3 p.m.
Upstate scored all five runs in the first two innings and PC
could not rally despite scores in the fifth and ninth innings.
Three of PC's seven hits came from the bat of Aaron Preston
(Goose Creek, S.C.), who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon. Brandon Paul (Augusta,
Ga.) and Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) each drove in a run and Paul extended
his hitting streak to five straight games.
Brett Byrum (Rowlett, Texas) pitched six innings and held
the Spartans scoreless for the final four, only surrendering a combined two
hits in those innings.
Upstate got on the board first by way of a sacrifice fly in
the opening inning. The Spartans then struck for four in the second, using a
two-run Brody Greer double and two more base hits to take a 5-0 lead after
two innings.
PC took one run back in the fifth inning when Zebedis drew a
bases-loaded walk to bring in Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.). The Blue Hose kept the bases loaded but could not cash in again, trailing 5-1 after three.
The two sides traded quick innings for most of the evening,
with neither team getting a baserunner past second base until the ninth.
Facing two outs, Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) singled to left center and
moved to third base on an Upstate error. Paul brought the sophomore around with a
single up the middle to give PC its second run of the day. One more flyout
ended the game, however, before the Blue Hose could mount a larger rally.
Chad Sanders took over for Byrum and delivered two solid
innings, allowing no runs and two hits while registering a strikeout.
