SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball used
extra innings to dispatch the Wofford Terriers on Wednesday night, finishing
off a 3-1 win in 10 innings.
PC improves to 11-7 with the win, its second straight over
the Terriers. The Blue Hose will host UConn in a three-game series this weekend
that begins on Friday at 3 p.m. Wofford falls to 7-11.
Tied 1-1 in the 10th, PC turned out two runs and closed
out the Terriers in the bottom of the frame to get the win. The Blue Hose loaded
the bases to set up a perfect Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) RBI bunt down the first
base line that the third baseman beat out to keep the bags full. Nathan Chong
(Duluth, Ga.) then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right field to score one more
and make the score its eventual final tally, 3-1.
Chad Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) pitched two perfect innings
in relief to get his first career win and move to 1-1 on the season. Michael
Trebendis (Fayetteville, Ga.) secured two outs in the 10th before
two walks brought Michael Ricchi (McKinney, Texas) into the game. Ricchi forced
a popfly to end the game and earn his third save of the season.
Chong drove in two runs for the Blue Hose. The outfielder
and Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) each tallied two hits.
Brett Byrum (Rowlett, Texas) put together his second straight
strong start against Wofford, allowing only one run and five hits over seven
innings before leaving a 1-1 tie for Sanders.
Wofford loaded the bases in the first, using a pair of
singles and a two-out walk to fill the bases with Terriers. The freshman Byrum battled
back to induce a pop-fly to end the inning and keep the game scoreless, 0-0.
Wofford put another runner 90 feet away from paydirt in the
bottom of the third, but Byrum struck out Eric Brenk looking to keep the
shutout intact.
PC threatened in the top of the fourth by putting runners on
the corners before a warning track flyout sent the two teams into the bottom of
the frame at 0-0.
Byrum pulled out another escape in the fourth, forcing an
infield groundout with runners on second and third.
PC broke through in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Lizanich drew
a leadoff walk to bring up Chong. The redshirt junior ripped a double down the
left field line and leftfielder James Plaisted bobbled the ball to score Lizanich
and put PC ahead, 1-0.
First baseman Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) made a stellar
play to end the sixth inning. The Terriers ordered a hit and run with runners
on first and second and Luke Feisal at the plate. Feisal laced a hard-hit ball
the opposite way to Zebedis and the junior leapt to make the catch before
stepping on the bag, doubling up the Terriers and preserving the one-run lead.
Wofford tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, using a
hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to pull even heading into the
eighth, 1-1.
PC loaded the bases in the ninth but could not convert as a
one-out double play ended the frame without a Blue Hose run.
Sanders and the PC defense turned in some heroics to force
extra innings. With a runner on first and one out, Sanders induced a shallow
pop fly for the second out and struck out Matthew Kaskow for the third.
Josh Simpson took the loss for Wofford.
Wofford and PC meet once more this season when the Terriers
visit the PC Baseball Complex on Wednesday, March 20 at 3 p.m.
