CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped a Saturday matchup to Furman at the PC Baseball Complex, 8-3.
PC moves to 17-11 while Furman improves to 16-10. The teams will play the series finale on Saturday at Furman. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
The two sides played through five scoreless innings before Furman posted five runs in the sixth. The Blue Hose outhit the Paladins, 10-8, and only left five men on base.
Furman's Nate Smith took the win by allowing three runs and 10 hits over eight innings. Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) moved to 2-2 and allowed five runs on five hits in six innings. The junior held Furman scoreless until his final inning of work.
Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) went three-for-four to lead PC and drove in an RBI along with Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) and Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.).
The Blue Hose turned two 6-4-3 double plays in the fourth and fifth innings to keep the Paladins off of the scoreboard. Knox did not allow a hit until the fifth inning but the Paladins managed enough runs in the top of the sixth to take the win. Alex Abrams hit a two-run double to right field before Chris Ohmstede hit a two-run home run to left field as Furman took a 5-0 lead.
PC took two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to cut into Furman's lead. Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) hit a leadoff single to right field and eventually took third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt. Preston then beat out an infield single to bring in Lizanich. A Paul single to centerfield brought around Preston and made the score 5-2 in favor of the visitors.
Ohmstede homered again in the eighth—a solo shot—to add one more run to Furman's total. PC answered in kind during the bottom of the frame as two singles set up a Zebedis RBI base hit to centerfield.
Furman struck again in the ninth, taking advantage of two errors to score a pair of unearned runs and seal the 8-3 win.
Ryan Morris (Jamestown, R.I.) pitched two innings of relief and allowed only Ohmstede's solo home run.
