TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Presbyterian College baseball team
attempted a rally before dropping a road non-conference matchup to No. 5 Florida State on Tuesday evening,
falling 9-2.
PC moves to 8-5 on the year while Florida State improves to
11-0. The two sides meet once more on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The loss snaps a
seven-game winning streak for the Blue Hose.
The Blue Hose mounted a comeback bid in the ninth inning,
scoring both of its runs before the Seminoles managed to halt the rally. Brad
Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) laced a single to left field and Dixon Smith
(Conway, S.C.) took his spot at first via fielder's choice. With one out, Aaron
Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) doubled to right field for one of his team-high three
hits on the day. Smith took third on the play.
Freshman Trey Hayes (Belton, S.C.) then picked up his first
collegiate hit in timely fashion, singling up the middle to bring around Smith
and Dixon for a pair of runs. Unfortunately for the Blue Hose, a double play
would end the game on the next at-bat and give Florida State the win.
Brett Byrum (Rowlett, Texas) got the start for PC and pitched five
innings, allowing five runs on three hits to move to 1-2 on the year. Ryan
Morris (Jamestown, R.I.) and Connor Bishop (Perry, Fla.) threw a combined three
effective innings of relief by allowing only one run. Bishop retired the side
in order during a perfect eighth inning.
Both sides posted seven hits but the Seminoles drew seven walks
to PC's one. Florida State starter Luke Weaver earned his second win of the season
in a six-inning, three hit performance.
Five Blue Hose hit safely on the day, though Brandon Paul
(Augusta, Ga.) saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end.
Florida State opened the game with a run in the first
inning. The Seminoles used a hit batter, a single and a sacrifice fly to get on
the board.
The Seminoles added two runs each in the fourth and fifth
innings. One run in the fourth came on an error before Byrum proved able to get
out of a jam with the bases loaded. Stephen McGee hit a two-run home run in the
fifth to put the home side ahead by five runs.
McGee led all players with four RBI. He and Marcus Davis
each added two more runs in the sixth to cap the scoring for the home team.
