Jeter Goes the Distance As Baseball Clips Asheville, 5-4

ASHEVILLE, N.C.Bud Jeter (Columbia, S.C.) pitched his fifth complete game of the season as the Presbyterian College baseball team edged UNC Asheville on Sunday in a series rubber match at Greenwood Field, 5-4.

PC improves to 20-17 on the year and 7-5 in the Big South while UNC Asheville slips to 12-26 and 2-10 in league play. The Blue Hose next take on Georgia away on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Jeter scattered eight hits over nine innings and allowed four runs—three earned—while striking out five Bulldogs. The junior sees his record move to 5-2 on the season.

Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.) set a new PC Division I-era record with nine assists from the shortstop position and Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) led PC with a 4-for-5 effort, becoming the first Blue Hose to tally four hits this season.

PC scored all five of its runs in the first three innings, striking for four in the third.

Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) drove in the visitors' first run of the game, lacing a double down the left field line to score Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) from third. A strikeout ended the inning with runners on second and third, but Jeter and the PC defense held Asheville scoreless until PC added four more in the top of the third.

Lizanich led off the inning with an infield single before taking second on an error. Another error put Chong on and plated Lizanich to give PC a 2-0 lead. McRae then signled and another error on a Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) sacrifice bunt scored both McRae and Paul to extend PC's lead to 4-0. Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Paul and the inning ended with the Blue Hose ahead, 5-0.

Asheville took three of the runs back in the bottom of the inning thanks in part to a Tommy Houmard two-run single. The Bulldogs posted four of their eight total hits in the fourth to cut PC's lead to two, 5-3.

Jeter continued to hold the Bulldogs at bay until Ashville scored for the final time in the bottom of the sixth via fielder's choice. Jeter then induced a foul ball popout and Hagan threw out a runner trying to score during a steal attempt at second to end the inning with PC ahead, 5-4.

The Bulldogs went three-up, three-down in the seventh and a 6-4-3 Blue Hose double play ended Asheville's scoring chances in the eighth.

Asheville threatened in the ninth, but Jeter struck out the final batter on three straight pitches to seal the win for the Blue Hose.
