Volleyball Falters at UMKC Kangaroo Classic

The Presbyterian College volleyball team opened the Kangaroo Classic, being held Sept. 13-14, in Kansas City, Mo., with a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16) loss to UMKC and a 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-14) loss to Wake Forest.

The Blue Hose, who fall to 1-9 overall, were led this afternoon by Rachel Hall with her 23 total kills.  She paced PC in both matches with 12 against the Roos and 11 against the Demon Deacons.  Kelly Berryman posted 17, while Halle Tripp added 10.  She recorded 10 against WF and nine against UMKC.

Defensively, the Blue Hose were led by Mary Trimpe with her 15 digs against UMKC and 17 against Wake Forest.  Ashtin Frank came away with 71 assists (39 and 32).

The Blue Hose finished the day with 88 kills, 46 coming in the loss to UMKC.  In that match, they recorded 29 errors to come away with a .106 hitting percentage.  Against Wake Forest PC tallied 42 kills and 32 errors for a .073 hitting percentage.

After falling in game one, 25-17, to UMKC, the Blue Hose fought back in the second and held as much as a seven-point lead on several occasions, including 21-14.  The Roos used a 5-0 run to cut the margin to 21-19, before a Berryman kill ended the rally.  UMKC made it a one-point game, 22-23, but Hall came back with two kills over the next three points to lead PC to the 25-23 win.

The Blue Hose and Roos played the third game close, with PC trailing by just two, 21-19, late.  UMKC collected kills the final three of five points to take the 25-20 win, however.  PC went on to drop the fourth and final game, 25-16, to fall by the final 3-1 score.

PC rebounded against Wake Forest by taking the first game, 25-22.  The Blue Hose led from start to finish and by as much as eight points at times.  Leading 24-20, the Demon Deacons cut the lead to two, 24-22, but Hall responded with the game-ending kill.

Wake Forest came out strong in game two, taking an 8-0 lead before PC got on the board off a service error.  The Demon Deacons continued to coast, taking a 20-10 lead before settling on the 25-11 win.

Games three and four were much of the same with WFU taking the 25-15 and 25-14 wins.

PC takes on Eastern Illinois at noon Saturday to round out tournament action.
