LEXINGTON, Va. – The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped its weekend series opener at VMI on Friday as the Keydets won a 15-2 result at Gray-Minor Stadium.
PC moves to 10-12-1 and 3-1 in the Big South Conference. VMI improves to 11-9 and 2-2 in the Big South. The two sides next play on Saturday at 4 p.m.
VMI scored six runs over the first two innings and six in the eighth en route to the win. Four errors also aided the Keydet cause.
Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) each tallied two hits for PC while Michael Trebendis (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Derek Long (Alpharetta, Ga.) picked up an RBI each.
Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) took the loss to move to 4-2 with 4.1 innings of work.
An Eric Mayers three-run double gave VMI a 3-0 lead in the opening inning before PC took one run back in the top of the second. An error allowed Weston Jackson (Rock Hill, S.C.) to reach and the sophomore used a Midkiff single to take second. Trebendis then brought Jackson home via double and the score stood at 3-1.
Five hits in the second helped the Keydets add three more runs to their total and a Matt Winn sacrifice fly in the third put VMI up, 7-1.
PC scored its final run in the fourth. A Paul single and an error put the Blue Hose in scoring position. Long smacked an 0-1 single back up the middle to plate Paul for a 7-2 score.
Mayers struck again with a solo home run in the fifth and Brandon Angus drove in another run with an RBI single in the sixth ass VMI continued to score.
VMI did the rest of its damage in the eighth inning to the tune of six runs. Two errors and five hits helped the outburst. A Will Connerly triple scored two of the runs as VMI put the game out of reach in the frame.
