MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped its series finale to Coastal Carolina on Sunday in a 9-3 loss at TicketReturn.com Field.
PC moves to 12-26-1 on the year and 5-3 in the Big South Conference. The Blue Hose return home to host Wofford in the third game of the season series on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Coastal Carolina improves to 20-21 overall and 11-7 in League action.
The Blue Hose led 3-1 after two innings, but five runs in the eighth helped the Chanticleers pull away.
Seven different Blue Hose posted a hit on the day and Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.) tallied two RBI. Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) also picked up an RBI.
Aaron Lesiak (Greenville, S.C.) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits to move to 1-4 with the loss. Andrew Beckwith earned the win in relief to move to 3-1 with 2.1 innings of scoreless work.
Coastal Carolina scored first in the first inning. Connor Owings led off with a single and took second on an errant pickoff throw before two groundouts allowed Owings to plate the unearned run.
The Blue Hose responded with three in the top of the second. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) drew a leadoff walk and a Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) bunt sent the senior to second. Jacob Midkiff's (Rock Hill, S.C.) infield single put two aboard for Chong, who ripped a triple to left center that scored both runners. An eventual Lizanich fielder's choice scored Chong as PC took a 3-1 lead early.
Two PC hits in the third put runners in scoring position but the Blue Hose could not convert. A trio of Coastal hits in the fifth allowed the home team to score two runs thanks to a run-scoring wild pitch anda Tyler Chadwick RBI single. The Blue Hose turned a 5-2-3 double play early in the frame to keep the Chanticleers at bay.
In the sixth, a Kyle Jackson RBI double put the Chanticleers in front for the first time. Five Coastal runs on three hits and an error in the eighth inning—three from the bat of Owings on a home run—put the game away for the 9-3 final.
