FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped the third and final game of its weekend series at Longwood on Sunday, falling in a 10-7 loss.
PC moves to 14-28-1 on the year and 6-15 in the Big South Conference. The Blue Hose take a break for exams before hosting Charleston Southern in a weekend series that begins on Friday at 3 p.m. Longwood improves to 19-25 overall and 8-13 in League action.
Longwood scored eight runs in the opening inning and withstood a five-run Blue Hose comeback bid in the ninth for the win.
Aaron Lesiak (Greenville, S.C.) pitched 5.2 innings and took the loss to move to 1-5. Travis Burnette threw seven innings and improved to 2-4 before Devin Gould picked up his first save by striking out the last batter.
Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) led PC with a 4-for-4 day at the plate and two RBI. Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) and Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.) each drove in a pair of runs as well.
The Lancers used two errors and five hits en route to an eight-run opening inning. Kyri Washington, Alex Lewis, Mac McCafferty, Brandon Harvell and Matt Dickason each posted an RBI in the frame as the Lancers raced to an early advantage.
The Blue Hose pierced the Lancers' armor for a run in the fifth. Singles from Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) and Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) set up a sacrifice bunt from Glen Casaceli (Jupiter, Fla.) to put runners at second and third. Weyenberg then drove home Jackson on an RBI groundout to make it a 8-1 game.
Longwood struck for two more in the fifth when Washington hit a two-run double to right center to extend Longwood's lead to 10-2.
After a Midkiff infield single that scored Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) in the seventh, the Blue Hose mounted a furious rally in the ninth. The frame began with a pinch-hit Brandon Martin single before singles from Jackson and Midkiff scored a run and left two runners aboard. Casaceli singled to load the bases and Weyenberg cashed in with an RBI groundout. Lizanich then delivered a two-run single to left field that plated Casaceli and pinch runner Robert Moss (Jupiter, Fla.).
Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.) and Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) drew walks to load the bases and Lizanich capitalized on a wild pitch to pull PC within three, 10-7. A strikeout ended the game, however, with two aboard as Longwood held on to win.
