CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team fell in the second game of its weekend Big South Conference series to visiting Charleston Southern, 4-0.
PC moves to 14-30-1 and 6-17 in League action while Charleston Southern improves to 25-20 and 8-11 in Big South play. The teams meet in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Charleston Southern scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings. Both teams posted six hits and two errors a piece, but nine stranded runners hurt PC's chances at a win.
Andrew Tomasovich pitched a six-hit, complete game shutout for the Buccaneers to improve to 5-2. Aaron Lesiak pitched seven innings for PC, giving up four runs—three earned—with five hits and four strikeouts. He moves to 1-6. Freshman reliever Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief.
Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) picked up a team-high two hits for the Blue Hose. Alex Tomasovich went 2-for-4 on the day with three RBI to lead the visitors.
Charleston Southern scored quickly to open the game. Andrew Widell singled with one away before Alex Tomasovich knocked a double to left field to score Widell. An error on the play allowed Tomasovich to reach third before scoring on a Chase Shelton groundout for a 2-0 Charleston Southern lead.
Tomasovich hit a two-run shot to left field in the third for a 4-0 lead, the game's final score.
PC threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) and Jackson delivered singles, but the Buccaneers picked up the final two outs of the frame.
The Blue Hose turned a 6-4-3 in the top of the seventh to keep Charleston Southern off the board and nearly scored in the bottom of the frame by putting a runner on scoring position with Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Derek Long (Alpharetta, Ga.) singles.
Charleston Southern put two runners on in the ninth but Workoetter induced an inning-ending pop fly to strand both.
