Wofford Hands PC First Loss of Season, 7-4

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team suffered their first loss of 2015 on a chilly, blustery Wednesday when the visiting Wofford Terriers scored six unanswered runs in the later stages of the game for a 7-4 victory.

PC moves to 4-1 on the year while Wofford improves to 4-0. The Blue Hose next play at Fluor Field in Greenville this weekend when the team faces Indiana on Friday (1 p.m.), Xavier on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Furman on Sunday (3 p.m.).

Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Peter Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) and Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) each drove in a run as well.

The Blue Hose jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from McRae and a two-run hit from Jackson.

Wofford answered when Derek Hirsch scored on a wild pitch in the third inning, but PC starter Hayden Deal (Newton, N.C.) escaped a bases-loaded jam by forcing a pop-up to keep the lead at 3-1.

PC added a run to its lead in the fifth. Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.) led off with a bunt single and moved around on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Johnson then brought in the centerfielder with an RBI fielder's choice to give PC a 4-1 lead.

Unfortunately for the Blue Hose, the Terriers' bats began to heat up in the top of the sixth. Two doubles to start the inning cut the lead in half and a hit-by-pitch put another aboard. TJ Richardson (Sugar Hill, Ga.) caught a runner leading off at third for the second out but Matt Ramsay hit an RBI triple and scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 4-4.

The Terriers went ahead in the seventh on an Alec Paradowski RBI single and Wofford loaded the bases with two outs, but an interference call ended the inning with the bases loaded.

Wofford's Matt Pelt and Kody Ruedisili hit solo home runs to lead off the ninth inning and give the Terriers the 7-4 win.

PC's AJ Priaulx (Warner Robins, Ga.) registered his first collegiate hit with a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth.

Deal allowed only one run in four innings and gave up four hits. PC used eight pitchers on the afternoon. Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) threw two innings of scoreless relief and Trey Hayes (Belton, S.C.) retired Wofford's final two batters without a run. Cole Norwood (Darlington, S.C.) took the loss to move to 0-1.
